Also of interest is the Crossland Zoo, which is quite nice for a small town zoo, and is one of the few free zoos in the country. There is a surprising variety of animals here and they appear well enough cared for, although the facilities could use some updating/improvement. There is a level, paved 2.8 mile walkway through the animal exhibits. There is also a petting zoo for the little ones and a playground.
Crossett is a town of about 5500 (down 10% since 2000) located along US Highway 82 in Ashley County in the Southeast corner of Arkansas. Ashley County was named for Chester Ashley a U.S. Senator from the state. There are a few buildings of architectural and/or architectural interest in Crossett, especially the Wiggins Cabin, a classic "dogtrot" style cabin. Wiggins Cabin is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There has been an annual Wiggins Cabin Festival on the 2nd Saturday of October for the last 35 years.
