 | Fort Smith Restaurants | Tips 1 - 10 of 11 | | It really was more like Mexican food rather than Cuban flavors. Yes, I know what Cuban is like; I was close many time when in Puerto Rico. NO pork with the hairs still on the skin. This was simply a southern style Mex restaurant being promoted as something else. Maybe we can now get to Cuba, but local flavor has a way to go.
Had a chicken enchilada burrito. It was okay and had some different toppings, like green chile base, but still Mexican flavor. Micky-companion had a pork wrap, and it was just okay-nothing to brag about. The marinated onions were good as side item and the black beans/rice of course. Basic items were $8-10 for lunch. It seemed pretty good. The real reason for stopping here is to drive up, and either turn on lights for service at the car, or walk in, or just shout. Looks like it has been here 40-50 years, and nothing has changed.
Ham & cheese is what I had, so I guess this is example of the fare. It was good and like made back form the 1960's. The other menu items seemed like of interest, like chicken fried steak, fried pickles, etc. Theme: DinerPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: On Towson streetDirections: About 2800 block of Towson-southwest side of town

Overall it was a fairly good place to eat. Food was fresh and the receptionist was authentic in that she did not speak much English. I think some of the locals get their fix here in a "BIG" way because of the quantity' even beat me for out for plates consumed.
The buffet had the full compliment of Chinese items to sample, appetizers, staple basics of pork, beef, and chicken, and some good fried rice. Desserts were there also. Price of buffet was $6.95. It is somewhat small, and maybe one of few in town of Chinese Theme: Chinese/Dim SumPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: least expensiveAddress: 3802 towsonDirections: Near the middle of this street that runs from US 540 to town.

calico county, on 56th street (off rogers avenue, just east of I-540), has terrific "down-home" food and excellent service at very reasonable prices (less than $10 per person, including soft drink). everything i have ever tried there was good. they have a huge selection, from roast beef to salads to soups to meat loaf to hamburgers to sandwiches to all kinds of chicken, etc. they are very tolerant of children, and all of the servers seem to be extremely good-natured.
they bring these WONDERFUL cinnamon-streaked rolls to the table when you first arrive. Leave a Comment Theme: AmericanPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: 56th streetDirections: off rogers avenue, just east of I-540

The walls are covered in vintage advertisments and signs. They have table, as well as booth seating for different size parties. The food is the real attraction. American country cookin' with lots of flavor.
My favorite is the pot roast. It positively falls apart on your fork it is so tender. You have got to try the broccoli/rice caserole as one of your sides. Even if you hate broccoli, you will love this. Everything I have tried has been great; Effie Mae's Meatloaf, the chicken fried steak, chicken livers, You can even get a vegetarian plate with all sides. Just try it. Fort Smith, a land of many influences. Although unknown to most outsiders (and many locals), the Army base, Ft. Chafee, in the city of Ft. Smith served as a haven and operations base for refugees from the Vietnam War in the 1970's and Castro's Cuba in the 1980's. Many of these folks hung around, and the food culture they created is incredible. Add in the "Texican" influence, and let the flavors run wild. You'll have to venture just outside of downtown on any major street, and you will find little restaurants and cafes that serve up these great foods. DON'T WORRY-some may look unwelcoming from the outside, but they want your business and company and are completely clean and safe. IMAGINE DINING IN HAVANA OR HANOI IN ARKANSAS? In Fort Smith, you can. As you step out of your car, you can smell the mesquite wood buring and hear the loud country music playing. The ambiance is Texas themed, upbeat and fun with interesing wild west artifacts littering the walls. Peanuts arrive at each and every table. All the steaks are hand cut and the Texas Ribeye will melt in your mouth. They also offer a wide variety of seafood and chicken plates. My wifes favorite is the Sweet Bourbon Salmon.
