The cells were never at maximum capacity which was 302 at that time.

I can imagine the noise the prisoners would have made!

There was also a lot of damage to the buildings on the island during the Indian occupation of the 1970's. Many buildings were burned or destroyed during this time.

One Cell is specially marked as being occupied by Al Capone, the famous gangster. The "Birdman of Alcatraz" also had a cell here, but seemed to be less important than Al.!!

When you are in the cellhouse look for cell number 152. This cell is a recreation of what an average cell would look like during the period between 1934-1963.

The crest over the entrance to the cellhouse on Alcatraz Island. The red and white stripes of the crest were altered during the Indian occupation to produce the word "FREE".

It may not be the reason why you have to go to Alcatraz, but it is an added bonus : the view over San Francisco is beautiful.

The stairs of the recreation yard are well known. It used to show the hierarchie in the prison order. When you were allowed to sit on top of the stairs, you were on top in the hierarchie.
