There are several other old, historic buildings in town with interesting architectural style. Two of these are The Elks Building and the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Alturas is the county seat for Modoc County. The county courthouse was constructed in 1914 using the neo-classical style of architecture. With its striking copper painted dome it is one of the prettier courthouses I have seen in the state.

As the couny seat, Alturas is home to the Modoc County courthouse. This neo-classical building was constructed in 1914 and not only dominates the surrounding area but is fairly unique among California's courthouses. There is no other courthouse in the whole state that really resembles it, even though many neo-classical courthosues were built in California around the same time and several stil stand. However, the building is in disrepair, both cosmetically and structurally, and needs significant work.

From the outside the Brass Rail has a bit of a Basque flavor to it. You then go inside and there is lots of wood, brick and red leather. Lighting is fairly dark. The waitress brought me a menu and said they served "family style" and she would bring my bread and butter, coffee, and soup. The only thing you order is your entree. The rest of the meal is standard to include ice cream for desert and an individual sized bottle of wine. The soup was served in a large metal tureen and had over four bowls worth in it (all of which I ate because it was so good). My entree was also excellent.
Forget anywhere else in this part of California, This is the place to go!
Favorite Dish: Everything they served from the bread to the entree, the soup, the wine even the ice cream was great.

Just Northwest of town is the Lava Beds National Monument which is well worth a visit. For more information on the monument, see my Lava Beds page.

Not far south of the town of Alturas on US Highway 395, is the Modoc National Wildlife Refuge. I stopped at one of the wildlife viewing spots and saw more wildlife that I had seen at almost any other refuge. It was like a scene from a movie. Try it.

Favorite thing: I've seen all kinds of migrating birds in Alturas. Huge flocks of geese and ducks. This particular couple of Canadian geese were flirting up a storm. They seem to be planning on putting up here for the summer.
