Mercantile Cafe and World Crafts and Gallery: A really good experience.
This was one of those instances of serendipity when, unexpectedly, you chance upon some- thing rather different and special. The Mercantile had caught my eye as we walked down Main Street - something about it reminded me of a small town diner I visited many years ago in Vermont.
So when there were hints of a sandwich or salad lunch stop I lead our little group back up the road and we went to to the Mercantile.
We all loved the polished boarded floor and seating, the informal, relaxed, almost homely layout of table and chairs, the newspapers and signs of internet availabilty.
And the colourful displays of paintings and craft work on sale which gave it a slightly hippie air that blended perfectly with its old town, unsophisticated appeal.
It was not too busy and we were soon served by the young staff behind the counter with great sandwiches and salad.
I don't recall how much it cost only that it was very good value for money and very reasonable.
It was only when we called in at the end of the afternoon for ice creams - ( excellent ones too with a great choice of flavours) that we noticed some information about the cafe. It turned out to be part of a community venture supporting local producers, providing volunteer and employment opportunities as well as a venue for community based acrivities.
We had all enjoyed our visit to Angels Camp and the friendly welcome we received from all we encountered, and were very pleased to have supported this homgrown venture. - so far removed from fast food outlets.
If you should be in Angels Camp do support it - and treat yourself at the same time!
Crusco's: Great Italian Place
Crusco's is a great little Italian restaurant in downtown Angels Camp that has been there for some years. We usually stop here if we need to eat on our way through Angels Camp if we don't want to eat in Murphys. The food is very good, the place nice, the people friendly, and it is probably the best Italian food, and one of the best restaurants, that you'll find anywhere in the immediate region, at least outside of Murphys. There are a more choices once one gets out of Calaveras County, say down in Sonora for example, but here, this is great.
It's not cheap, but all things considered, the prices are quire reasonable, too. It's also a reasonably good place to take kids as it's nice but still straightforward and "family friendly."
Favorite Dish: Everything we've had here is very good.
