Angels Camp Things to Do

  • Jumping Frogs, A Writer and Local...

This weekend as I write - May 13 -16 , 2010 the 100th anniversaty of the death of Samuel Langhorne Clemens will be remembered at the 82nd Calaveras County Fair held at the fairgrounds in Angels Camp. You might well ask - Who was Samuel Langhorne Clemens ? Well this Missouri-born printer, river boat pilot, failed miner, traveller, adventurer and...

  • Claussens Corner, popular Bar with a...

Right next door to the Information Centre there is a Bar that, from the outside, looks a bit of a Dive - a kind of hang-over from wilder days. But we learned (from chattting with staff in antique shops) that it is a very popular, well run establishment. We did however discover for ourselves, thanks to another of those informative plaques , that the...

  • The Visitor Centre

The Calaveras Visitor centre is housed in an attractive timber building with a lovely porch. It seems very typical of buildings of the town but I think this one may have beena new construction in the old style. You can find information coverin not only Angel Camp here but all of the County.

  • Cooperation and Welfare

The hard life of those who joined the Gold Rush has been well portrayed in films and in books. The harshness and danger of those days when, in search of newer, better seams of gold many people often lived nomadic lives. Those who settled in one place included those who had done well and went on to become influential in creating a civilised town for...

  • Downtown Angels Camp

Taking a stroll through Angels Camp, one can appreciate what a special place it is. Notice the plaques on the sidewalks that commemorate the past champions of the annual Jumping Frog contest.

  • Downtown Angels Camp

Downtown Angels Camp is, as is the case with many of the towns in the Gold Country, essentially strung out along one long street, making it very long but narrow (in comparison to, say, Sonoma, laid out around a plaza). Since it is the primary town, an only incorporated city, in Calaveras County, Angels Camp has the largest and architectully the...

Angels Camp Restaurants

  • A really good experience.

This was one of those instances of serendipity when, unexpectedly, you chance upon some- thing rather different and special. The Mercantile had caught my eye as we walked down Main Street - something about it reminded me of a small town diner I visited many years ago in Vermont. So when there were hints of a sandwich or salad lunch stop I lead our...

  • Great Italian Place

Crusco's is a great little Italian restaurant in downtown Angels Camp that has been there for some years. We usually stop here if we need to eat on our way through Angels Camp if we don't want to eat in Murphys. The food is very good, the place nice, the people friendly, and it is probably the best Italian food, and one of the best restaurants,...

Angels Camp Nightlife

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

From various posters spotted around town I got the impression there is a still a lot of home-style entertainment with community social events, concerts, drama productions , and karaoke nights,

But there is a big 5-screen cinema showing the latest films, including 3-D. on Main Street, right near the Post Office.
You can't miss it, originally built in 1936 its typical art-deco architecture makes it quite a feature in this historic little town.

  • Got letters to post?

While the custom of sending letters and post-cards home to family and friends persists - so too will waiting in a Post Office to buy the correct value stamps! That is why wherever I am away from home I look out for post offices in small towns. They are less busy than city offices and even in popular tourist destinations like Angels Camp, the...

The main street in the historical centre has plenty of shops to attract tourists - antiques, art and crafts, jewels, valuable old stones, coins and other items for collectors with a few clothing shops - mainly outdoor gear and casual. Plus home furnishing and appliances. And - sign of the times - a large thrift shopFor everyday essentials like food...
