My main page and the link below provide the historical details, but basically the sea wreck Palo Alto is a cruise ship business gone bust. One of only two concrete ships built in the Oakland U.S. Naval Shipyard, the Seacliff Amusement Company began taking cruises with it in 1930. Although a popular entertainment destination at the time, financial difficulties forced closer two years later. During the winter after the closing season, a heavy storm surge cracked the hull in two and the boat sank. The concrete structure remains a bird and sealife sanctuary and off-limits to tourists; however, from the end of the pier one can get some great shots.

The nearly straight two mile stretch of beach is wide and very popular with both locals and tourists alike. It's less crowded than the beaches at Capitola or Santa Cruz, and the cliff behind makes it more scenic as well. The sand is very fine and white, and slopes gently into the water. Dogs are allowed, although dog owners can be fined for not cleaning up after their animals. Parking is close to the beach, and while the number of concessions nearby are limited to one good cafe, the cafe does serve the kind of grub one expects to get at the beach. Beach volleyball and other beach sports are also accomodated as there's an equipment rental concession. One of the best parts of this beach for some is the RV parking lot, which is right on the beach. Many RVer's bring out the barbeque equipment and party on 4th of July weekend, a busy time for any of the Santa Cruz beaches.

There are at least a dozen or so million dollar plus homes on the beach at Seacliff Beach, most of which appear at risk for a storm surge. Above, hanging on the edge of the cliff are many more. Some are big money with bad taste, others are architectural gems. The main stretch is the 1/2 mile or so between New Brighton and Seacliff Beaches.

  • Reeling in a Fish at Aptos Pier - Aptos
Reeling in a Fish at Aptos
    Pier

After the Seacliff Amusment Company abandoned the concrete ship, Palo Alto (see tip for Palo Alto), the ship became popular for fishing. Eventually, the sunken wreck became dangerous and was closed to the public. However, the water filled holds of the hull continues to attract marine life, and so fishing from the pier can be quite good. There's plenty of room and the pier is far less crowded than the Santa Cruz pier, for example, and while seals continue to be competitors for the fish so baited, angling is still very good here. Afterall, the Monterey Bay is largely off limits to commercial fishing, due to the Monterey National Marine Sanctuary off shore.
