Arnold Things to Do
We did not have the best of internet connections where we were staying, and also needed printing facilities - so our Californian relatives - took us to the Calaveras County Arnold Branch Library.
To find it turn off the 4 at ACE Home and Garden Store, keep right, past the Fire Station and Post Office.
I have got to know several branch libraries on my travels in the US and am always enormously impressed and not a little envious of the facilities.
Here, as throughout many other libraries in the State, the budget has been reduced to a 10th of its previous allocation.
The established Library Volunteer programme makes a vital contribution through its booksales and other voluntary activities.
Here again,as in every library I visited on this trip, I was overwhelmed by the high standard of the service offered.
It was a very cold day but in front of a blazng (gas) fire, tables and chairs were set out.
Pulled up to the fireside an inviting rocking chair awaited.
Newspapers and magazines were all to hand, the shelves well stocked; parents with young chilldren came and went and the computer section with printing facilties was available for a nominal charge.
From the Voluntary run book stall we purchaseda number of books - glad to make a contribution to this local service.
At first sight, as you drive along Highway 4, the shopping possibilities for self caterers do not appear too promising.
However we found all of our needs could be met in the small Plaza on the right ( in the direction of Angels Camp) on the 49.
The Pines market, a good sized supermarket and stocks practically everything you would need or want. There is also a very good pharmacy there.
