After you visit the Charles Paddock Zoo, be sure to take a hike around the Atascvadero Lake (about 1 mile all the way around) and feed the ducks and geese on the way. Be sure to visit the Rotunda Building in the middle of town. During the summer you can enjoy the evening Music in the Park events with live music.
There are some really nice wineries in this area and further north, around the Paso Roble area. Try the Paso Inn for lunch and a soak in the natural hot spring water.
Drive out west Highway 41 and visit the Last Stage West for some live music. Highway 41 then turns into Morro Road and ends in Morro Bay. Visit the Pacific Ocean and watch the fishing industry in action.
You can head south from Atascadero about 10 miles and visit Santa Margarita and their famous Auction Barn. Further south is the college town of San Luis Obispo, where you can find some nice hotels and spas (Sycamore Mineral Springs, Avila Hot Springs, to name a couple) and enjoy some eclectic shopping. Plenty of places to catch a bite to eat, as well.
