Black script and artwork on a white shirt comes to life in living color under the sunlight. That is what Del Sol Catalina has waiting for you. This unique combination of science and sunshine brings black and white into full living color art work on shirts, hats, tank tops, swimming suits, shorts, tote bags and even nail polish.
Go inside or out of sunlight or ultraviolet rays and the item is back to black and white.
Del Sol was a pleasant surprise to find in Avalon as I had shopped at a location in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico a few years back and also seemed to go back every year to get a new T-Shirt from Del Sol. Now, I can sail across the 20 some odd miles and visit Santa Catalina as well as Del Sol. They are open 7 days a week. I noticed that Del Sol is putting locations everywhere in the world and your area may be next.
What to buy: T-Shirts are my thing and I love the art work that looks good in either B&W or Color. The ladies of all ages seemed to be buying two or three colors of nail polish and grandmas were buying the grandkids T-Shirts and toys all that would glow with color when they let the sunshine in.
Special in every way. Beautiful designer jewelry, great selection of wines, bubble baths and soaps, one of a kind pottery art, an espresso or latte, sandwiches or a bowl of soup. I give up. There is a little bit of everything for anyone. Books, cards, and videos of healthy ways to live. Look for the bank vault holding the wine bottles. You could spend more time in here than you thought.
What to buy: I like the private label gourmet food goodies. Also, the desserts at the food/coffee/wine bar are excellent.
Family Jewels is one of two stores on Avalon under the same ownership. The other is Two's Company. They are at opposite sides of the main beach street. Two's Company is near the Pleasure Pier while Family Jewels is located toward the Casino at the round The Landing Building. My wife insists that we browse the Family Jewels of Catalina Island because it has a better feel to it. Go figure. I do know that I was surprised to find some real finds of art as well as jewelry on Catalina and we have purchased items from the Family Jewels the last two times we have been in Avalon. Of course, my wife is the one that insists we go here so actually it is she that has purchased items the last two times we were in town. Sorry dear, but I cannot tell a lie.
What to buy: That special piece of jewelry just might be found in the Family Jewels of Catalina Island. Okay, the name makes you laugh, get over it. It's quite catchy, actually. If you do purchase here, make sure you hold onto your family jewels bag of goodies. They are priceless. ;-)
This is a beach town shopping center, so no need to write a tip on each shop here, except to say that the Arcade has the old time games I played when I visited Avalon as a child. Lots of fun for children of all ages. The many shops here have the tourist trade in mind but there are a few finer clothing stores as well.
The kicker is the Web-Cam in the Hotel Metropole's lobby. There is also one outside in the patio courtyard shopping area. Many a tourist has cell phoned home to tell someone to get on the computer and look at me on the web-cam. "Yep, that's me waving at the camera. Really it is. Where? I'm in Catalina." That goes on in over 50% of the comments tourists say when looking at the camera. See the Metropole Marketplace web-cam and look for the wave action. Pun intended.
What to buy: There seem to be so many types of boutiques and shops. I will not get into it all but the Metropole Marketplace web-page has them all listed and each has its own advertisement for your perusal. The two I do mention are the Mardi Gras Arcade for the fun of it and the Bay of the Seven Moons for the art and feel of the South Pacific.
Catalina Tile is a gift of the history of Santa Catalina. This color inlaid style of paver tile began in the 1920's with the Catalina Clay Products Company and the Catalina Island Tile and Pottery Company. By the end of the 1930's, Avalon sported many tiled buildings, fountains, window designs, walls, and even tiled manhole covers. But, as popular as these tiles were, the company ceased to exist.
Today, this tile is known as Catalina Tile and is being reproduced by many tile companies. One of them sells the tile out of a store that bears the name "Silver Canyon Tile Company". Truly a tourist item, the tile does look great and can be used in a garden or even a room in the home. At least stop by and take a look at the wide range of tiles for sale.
What to buy: Tiles with designs of the Island seem very popular. I chose a tile that said "Catalina Island" with a picture of a Catalina landmark, the "Holly House".
What to pay: Size is the factor in price, but the range is from $3.00 to $10.00 is by design and color.
The oldest, friendly and affordable gift shop in Catalina specializing in island & nautical items. The shop has old Avalon pictures on the door.
What to buy: We purchased some postcards and a buffalo bank for my daughter. We also picked up some old pictures and key rings.
Well if you want to buy a Catalina T-shirt you certainly can do that. Or if you want some potpourri or taffy or some Disneyland type crap, that's easy enough to do. Also if you're a big fan of motorcycle death riders made out of shells, well you've come to the right place. You won't find anything else worth buying here.
