Ok, Bakersfield is called that for a reason. During the Summer it gets hot. 95 to 105 degrees hot or even hotter. This isn't a dry heat like Las Vegas has, but it isn't real humid either. You are going to feel the heat from June easily through September usually. So plan on wearing lite apparel and laltely we have had a heck of a time with west Nile virus carried by Mosquitoes, so long pant and long sleeved shirts and blouses are the way to go. Either that or a fair amount of Off bug spray.
Then there is the winter. I have talked to those that compare it to Alaska cold. Foggy, humid, very cold. Dress warm, and in layers preferably. Thermals Underwear comes in handy. But then if the sun comes out it can warm up 20 degrees. It can be very crazy weather at times.
Miscellaneous: Driving in Tule fog during the winter here locally can be very dangerous. Allow for extra time between trips. Drive slow with the windows down (to hear oncoming traffic or side traffic) Travel with the low beams on your car. High beams just make matters much worse in dense fog.
If you're planning a trip to Bakersfield during the summer months, bring tank tops, short, and flip-flops! It's mighty hot!! Also, be sure to bring some jeans and a nice shirt/blouse for dining out. There are also a few fancy places to eat, so bring one casual-dress outfit and you'll be set!
Toiletries and Medical Supplies: These things can all be bought in Bakersfield, so if you want to leave extra room for souveniers, don't bother bringing any.
Photo Equipment: Definitely bring a camera. There are some pretty sights!
