Bakersfield has one the distinct places to have a Amtrak station. It's done very nicey, and has plenty of parking. Bus service transportation is made available to places that the train does not stop at. This station connects with the tracks that are heading north to Sacramento.
If you want to head east then you would need to leave from the Barstow station. I am sure they have bus services to provide you with that connection.

The Bakersfield Greyhound Bus Station is located at 1820 18th street close to the center of the old downtown. The station is open 24 hours and across the street is a small Hispanic oriented bus station where inquiry may lead to useful low cost transportation. I took a walk around the area during the 20 minute stop, and took many of my downtown images used in the tips for these pages.
The old Fox Theater is within easy walking distance. The building is generally well maintained, and I didn't see any particular reason to be concerned about safety at this Greyhound station location, whether by day or by night. This is, however, no longer the wealthiest part of Bakersfield. Greyhound is well known for providing nationwide transport at often less than half the price of airline or train ticket prices, and so represents a sound choice for students and others wishing to travel on the cheap.
