Hard to find parking

  • You cannot find parking for the whole day unless you are a Berkeley resident. Parking is very difficult around campus and only metered parking is available. Further out from campus you can find parking, but non-residents are only allowed 2 hours until after 5pm everyday except sunday.

    Parking on Game Day

Parking in Berkeley is usually not too bad, the major shopping streets excepted (Telegraph, Shattuck). The major exception is on game days, when parking anywhere between UC and Telegraph can be a real challenge!

Memorial Stadium is essentially a neighborhood ballpark. There are no freeways leading to the stadium. There is very little parking and what parking there is is usually taken by season ticket holders. You can try the Cal website, but, speaking as a long time Cal fan, let me give you my tips on parking on game day!

Parking close to the stadium is not necessarily a good idea. All of the streets around Memorial Stadium are narrow residential lanes that are mobbed with people before and especially after the game. Most of the Frat houses are right around the stadium, and, well, you know how THAT goes! Even if you find a place, you may find it very hard to get out for a while.

Most of the Frat and Sorority houses (and chuches and indeed any businesses with extra space) open their lots to football parking. It's pricey - $25-40 - but they often throw in free food and drink. If you have a big car with lots of people then this may be the way to go.

Otherwise you park on the street a good ways from the stadium and walk. Beware of Permit restrictions - some areas are restricted on Saturdays and some aren't - read the signs carefully. Generally, anywhere downhill from Telegraph is OK. You can get a map of permit areas and restrictions from www.ci.berkeley.ca.us. You can also take BART to the Berkeley station and walk; it's a bit of a hike to the stadium, but it's a lovely hike - right through the heart of the UC campus.

A free shuttle bus runs on game days from the main Berkeley BART station to Memorial stadium. Catch it at Addison Street, a block away from the station. From the station it runs up College Ave. You can catch it at any bus stop, but you may have to flag it down.

  • if you are staying in SF, you can plan a day trip to Berkeley with ease. Take the BART metro to Berkeley and then walk up the hill. you will eventually reach the University and Telegraph. (10 minute walk)

  • From the Oakland airport, take an AirBART shuttle from in front of either terminal. The fare is $2.00 each way. The shuttle will bring you to the Oakland Airport/Coliseum BART station. Here, you can catch a Richmond-bound BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) train to the Berkeley station (Berkeley, not North Berkeley). Walk east up Center Avenue until you reach Oxford. You are now standing in front of the western perimeter of the UC Berkeley campus!

Coming from the San Francisco Airport, take the bus to the Colma station and get on any train. Transfer at Powell or Embarcadero to a Richmond train and get off at Berkeley.
The campus and most areas of interest are within close proximity, so I recommend walking. AC Transit runs a lot of buses in the city, but they're extremely unreliable and rarely run on schedule. Walking's probably the best bet. We have great weather for most of the year, but bring an umbrella, especially in Feb./March, to avoid getting soaked. We are in the San Francisco Bay, after all, and things do occasionally get a little gloomy.
