Students need a place to eat right? Well, walking into this eatery, one is overwhelmed with the presence of students, and… they are wolfing down the good cheap food. Although the restaurant will not will not win any awards for cleanliness, you have to buss your own tables, you will be satisfied with their menu. Breakfast is available all day, and the lunch menu consists of a wide variety of burgers, soups, sandwiches, and traditional sides. I had the meatloaf and cheese sandwich, it was sweet, although the coleslaw was actually kimche. At under $7 for lunch, it is a deal.

My favorite dish was the bacon. I ordered it for my vary picky 9 year old soon. At $1.60 for five slices it’s a steal. He ate two orders. My older son, Jon, highly recommends breakfast.

This café is one of the latest spots open in Berkeley (open to 2am). This is a nice place to hang if you don’t feel like going to sleep just yet.

Berkeley Espresso, Fertile Grounds, Village grounds are some of the cafes that offer free wireless internet. It is usually tricky finding a seat, since everyone else is parked with a laptop, so get there early.

There is a huge salsa bar with over 30 types of salsa to compliment your meal. The menu is extensive with everything from a mole nopales prawn burrito to tortas to daily specials. Good carne asada and polo asada. Imported Negro Modelo beer is only 2.70 a bottle.

My favortite menu items are the nopales mole burritos. The salsas are excellent and fresh, mild to sweet to freakin' hot! The hot latina behind the counter is a hot dish too. ;-)

Berkeley offers a wide diversity of high quality cuisine, from Asian to European to African. The best-known place for Californian cuisine is Chez Panisse, one of the top restaurants in the country. You know it has to be good if Bill Clinton has eaten there!

Gregoire's: Gourmet ghetto at its best!

The wind was blowing towards us walking down Cedar, and my mouth watered, hoping the smell was coming from the place we were headed. When I walked up to the hole-in-the-wall and saw a beautiful cut of salmon searing on a grill next to an open window with a picnic table, I knew we were in the money.

Gregoire's is why my former roommate moved from the real ghetto of East Palo Alto into what she calls "the gourmet ghetto" of North Berkeley. Here, the flames competetively sear strictly organics with neighbors like Chez Panisse, or don't if they take the raw food strategy, all vying for your pallette's wildest imagination. The gamut includes you week's wages and a phone call two months ago, to walk-up organic Thai for 5 bucks.

Gregoire's is somewhere in-between, since you'll have to wait with other hungry foodies huddling on the sidewalk stretching their ears for their order of seasonal French-prep delights to be ready, even if called-in ahead. You can't reserve the lone table on the sidewalk, and the hungry people munching on bones at it won't pay attention to your eagerness, either. The menu is full of lamb, chicken, potatoes puffed or wedged, scallops, halibut cheeks, gourmet mac n cheese, roasted tomatoes, and the prep is littered with flavor as chutney, spices, grilled onions, bread crumbs, and dippings.

We took our meal to a show at the Greek where the pricey $10-$20 entrees stood up with flavor, unique bistro take-out boxes that our neighbors admired longingly, and silver-painted plastic utensils.

French is my favorite food prep style for the flavor that comes with simple things like meat and sides, and this place does it right.

The Halibut cheeks were a little dry, breaded and fried, with bone surprizes, but nevertheless enjoyed.
The lamb and chutney is worth getting your fingers greasy for, and the chutney is reason enough to order it.
The potato puffs are rich and naughty.
The mac and cheese with mushrooms was tasty and filling.
    The potato fingerlings were delicious.

If you are an international student, there is a good chance you might go for a dorm room here. But even if you’re not, the café there is a great place to just hang out and enjoy a drink and listen to the wide diversity of people and languages that float around.

KC's Bar-B-Que: Best East Bay Barbecue

KC’s is a mixture of traditional Arkansas-style barbeque, antique shop, and African American Americana cleverly hidden as a hole-in-the-wall eatery. The restaurant can seats about 30 patrons in a unique antique shop dinning room. The service is a walk up counter, and then you are free to seat yourself. The menu is pure heaven; ribs, chicken, sliced beef, and links. The sauce is very sweet, but everything is available dry. The barbeque is top notch and the portions are large. I’d say it lives up to its billing as the best in the East Bay.

The beverage service is somewhat weak. Your choices are limited to canned and bottled soda and water, but the quality of the food more than makes up for the lack of options. Of course, a good beer would be a perfect complement – I guess you could always get your food to go.

This place is a staple of student culture and well deserving of the numerous “best donut” awards it has earned over the years. If you looking for a good place to grab a donut and coffee, this is it.

    Maple Bars of course!
