Cirlce of Freedom at UC Berkeley, California by RedEaredPanda On the grounds of University of California of Berkeley, I believe on Sproul Plaza, there exists a circle called the "Circle of Freedom". a 3 feet diameter of earth within which nothing is unlawful and and anything is permitted.. This picture was taken in December of 1996, a demonstration held to mourn the loss of Mario Savio, the leader of the free speech movement during the hippie movement and the Vietnam anti-war times.. One of Mario Savio's famous moments came when he mounted the roof of a police car to defend free speech on UC Berkeley Campus.. The naked women holding hands and going around the "Cirlce of Freedom" were students of UC Berkeley during the times of Mario Savio.. A shot of Telegraph Ave in Berkeley by RedEaredPanda Telegraph Ave in Berkeley has a special place in the history of the city and the hippie movement in 1960's along with its connection to the people's park. At the end of the street is the University of California, Berkeley's campus hence the street is a commute for many students as they make their way to class or to one of many coffee shops in Berkeley to get some reading done. The Closer you get to the university on Telegraph ave, the more you see street vendors on each side of the street selling merchandise. Items sold range from Artist's own art such as drawings, photographs, T-shirts with 70's designs, etc.. There are many vendors selling silver jewelry along with local arts, bumper stickers and even a little stall where they sell books on how to grow your own marijuana.. It is a very interesting street to walk and observe and maybe even purchase a local art to remind you of the craziness about Telegraph Ave and its locals.. There are famous second hand book vendors such as Moe's Books or Cody's Books on Telegraph Ave.. There are also many inexpensive food vendors on both sides of the street obviously geared towards students but never the less, some have good food.. I will include a few of my favorites in the restaurants section.. A definite must for the tourist for the first time visiting Berkeley. Leave a Comment Address: Telegraph Ave in Berkeley

Visit this historic park before it gets turned into a parking lot. This is a place where lots of bums hang out. There is a bin for good samirtans to drop off clothes, blankets and canned foods. But be careful: that puddle may be pizz and that crap might not be from a big dog. I've seen a couple people selling drugs here, but hey, it's Berzerkeley and it's usually only weed. But don't be scared off. Because people also come here to paint, play music, sun bathe, or just sit and talk. There is a basketball court (only in berkeley can you get to play B-ball with bums and then argue about politics with that same group of bums) and a nice big field. http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/CoolThings/parks/PeoplesPark.html Leave a Comment

To get the full effect of living in Berkeley You need to visit Telegraph Ave. This is a historic street where movements such as the Free Speech movement and the Black Panthers gained momentum. You'll find interesting shops, bums, cheap restaurants, cart peddlers, drunks, posers, slackers, street artists, political arguments(sometimes between bums), and other interesting sights. Leave a Comment Directions: Start at Bancroft & Telegraph (the mouth of UC Berkeley's Sproul Plaza) and walk south. It gets more and more interesting up until you hit Dwight.

Segment on People's Park Wall by RedEaredPanda To get a history of people's park in Berkeley, please see my main page on Berkeley. The Wall with the history of People's park in Berkeley drawn as events is exactly next to people's park ( I forgot which street but crossing Telegraph Ave). It is a very interesting wall and I would recommend every tourist to visit this wall. I have taken pictures of parts of the wall showing different events in history over time and you can check them out in the Berkeley travelougue. Circle of Freedom at UC Berkeley by RedEaredPanda Here is a closer look at the Cirlce of Freedom on University of California, Berkeley campus. The circle is said to be protected and free and nothing is unlawful and everything is permitted on the 3 feet diameter of the ground. This picture was taken by me when I was a student at UC Berkeley in 1990's. The circle is worth a visit when you're in Berkeley and would like to be a part of history of the Free Speech Movement and the Political days of Berkeley in California. Leave a Comment Directions: On UC Berkeley Campus passed the sather gates on the ground infront of the sproul plaza steps.

I personally love to see the street sellers on this avenue. I can not dissociate Berkeley and its unique Telegraph Avenue. It's a pleasure to walk by and look for the hand-crafted Art created on the spot. Lovely.

It is one of the most famous Universities in the USA. I personally love its campus: plenty of green areas, students are of all countries in the world, the ambiance is very informal and everybody is very tolerant to the general diversity being seen. Nice. I feel I am fortunate since I had the chance to study at this University. In 1998 I did enroll in a English Language Program from which I still keep some of my fondest memories. Thank you Berkeley.

by Karnubawax Telegraph Ave. is more "Haight Street" than the actual Haight St! Telegraph Ave. is the epicenter of hippie Berkeley. Especially on the weekends, dozens of stalls line both sides of the street with hippie artisans selling all manner of jewelry, clothing, artwork, henna tattoos, and inflamatory bumper stickers. Beggars and bums are just as plentiful as the vendors, but they're part of the show. Don't just look at the street vendors; there are wonderful shops along Telegraph, too. Many cool stores selling all kinds of weird stuff from all over the globe abound, so you're bound to see something new and interesting. One word of warning: Always ask about a store's return policy before buying! This is good advice anywhere, but its especially true here in Berkeley!!! Leave a Comment

Close-up pic of my long-awaited It's It by lisa_lise My friend who grew up in Berkeley says he always craves an It’s It when he’s away from Berkeley too long. It’s similar to an ice cream sandwich, except the cookie part is a crunchy wafer and the whole thing is covered in chocolate. You can get them at most convenience stores, and they come in vanilla, chocolate, and coffee flavors. Leave a Comment
