The long and winding road.
Ok, THE THING to do at Big Sur is drive the coastal highway 101. This is a great stretch of road which is incredibly scenic. You will problay stop your car around 30 times to take great pics. Like I said in the intro, drive slo and safe and be awed. Here are some pics.
Drive Highway One
Highway one between carmel and San Simeon is an absolute adventure...the Big Sur Coast is one of the most memorable drives you will ever have the privledge of doing. It hugs the coastal mtns. and offers breathtaking vistas around every turn. The sparkling Pacific Ocean crashes below as you make your way down the left coast. It is still unspoiled and under developed...and for California ...that says something!! Great dining and lodging along the way as well...Its crowded in Summer(esp August) and on Holidays ....so go at other times...and take a drive at night...you have the road to yourself.
Enjoy!! but be safe....it is a dangerous route

Fogged In, No Problem
Even though Highway 101 may be fogged in at times on your scenic drive, you can still get some pretty good, gothic looking pics. It almost seems like one has discovered a highway above the clouds and towards the heavens.
CA Highway 1, not US 101!
attention tip editor! you have misplaced this tip since the US 101 South and North does not pas by the Central Coast Section of Big Sur, Only California State Route One or Highway 1 actually passes by the Scenic Cabrillo Highway Part of CA State Route One in the romantic Central Coast.
California State Route 1 or simply known as Highway 1 is one of the most scenic Coastal Highway in the United States and the most spectacular part of this Highway is located along the Monterey Coast and the Big Sur Areas where you could see Rugged Peaks, Rugged Rocky Outcroppings along the Pacific Coasts, Surf Laden Big Waves at the many isolated Beaches along the route and several Points and wonderful architectural bridges. It Starts from Interstate 5 (I-5) near Dana Point in Orange County and runs north to U.S. Highway 101 near Leggett in Mendocino County. Highway 1 enters the Big Sur region, crossing the San Carpoforo Creek just south of the Monterey County line. For about 90 miles (140 km) from the San Carpoforo Creek to the Carmel River, the road winds and hugs the cliffs of Big Sur, passing various coastal parks in the area. This segment of the highway, built between 1919 and 1937, also crosses several historic bridges, including the scenic Bixby Creek Bridge, a reinforced concrete arch with a 320-foot (98 m) span that passes over the Bixby Creek gorge, and the Rocky Creek Bridge.
