Following the Scenic Route nr. 1 one has to make many stops at intresting places. It starts already in Santa Barbara and goes on with almost every town that one passes. Jumping out are Morro Bay (strange rockformation just out of the coast) and San Simeon (Hearst Castle)..

DRIVE, DRIVE, DRIVE!!!!!

If you're coming from overseas.... you must BEG, BORROW, RENT or STEAL A CAR!! Whatever it is, make sure you get a car! Don't shortchange yourself and fly from LA to SanFran (or vice versa). I know many people who join tour groups do that to save time... but it's a big NO-NO!

Before you embark on your road trip, please DO check up on the current conditions along California Highway 1. You can obtain such invaluable information from the California Department of Transportation (CalTrans). Incidentally, the Big Sur region lies almost entirely within California's Monterey County; and a SMALL portion of its southern end is located in the San Luis Obispo County. So, this info will definitely be helpful to you when you're interpreting CalTrans's reports because many reported conditions on Highway 1 are outside the Big Sur region.

Just trying to be extra careful, that's all....
