Bird viewing at Zuma Beach lagoon. During the winter storms the waves are too choppy and the water is to murky for pelicans and other seabirds. They hang by the shore waiting for a break in the weather. The pelicans act like old biddies, looking out to sea, then turning to their neighbor and complain about the damn weather. There are many other species and walking paths. Zuma Beach Lagoon is about a 30 minute drive North from Santa Monica. During the weekdays you can always find free parking on the road in the are known as "free Zuma"
Just 15 minutes from Calabasas, this is a beautiful canyon complete with various trails, stream, waterfall, even a visitors center and parking. Walk up 2 miles to the remains of Roberts house (burned down in 1982) complete with bomb shelter. The remains of a palm garden are running wild. Huge Bird of Paradise plants in full bloom. This is a great area for photo ops.
From Calabasas, head down Malibu Canyon Road, Right on PCH, Right at Corral Canyon (the 76 station) and you are there.
