    Annual Strong Ale Festival

I just happened to be in San Diego for the 8th Annual Strong Ale Festival which is was held in Carlsbad Dec 3-4, 2004. Micro brewers from around the area bring there best to the festival. Strong Ales are defined as containing more than 8% alcohol by volume. It is held next to, and sponsored by the the Pizza Port Restaurant and Port Brewing Company. Your entrance fee includes a wrist band to let you in both days, an inscripted half pint glass for sampling, a guide to the selections, and 6 tickets--all for $20. You then fight your way to the long bar and shout out you selection by number, and the attendant pours you a 4 oz beer. After you have used your first 6 tickets you can buy more for $1 each. I met some of the most interesting people there. One couple had flown in from Boston just for this event, another from Colorado had claimed to have tasted and catalogued over 6000 different microbrews! I was not really into strong ales until this event....I was there for 4 hours on Friday and then came back Saturday morning for 12 more hours! Imagine drinking something called "Pliny the Elder" for breakfast! This event is outdoors under tents within an enclosure. Weather this year was cool and a coat, while rarely used in San Diego County, was necessary.
