  • There are only a few parking lots in town. So, you will have to park on the street. The curbs that are painted green are limited up to 30 minutes or less. The unpainted curbs have signs posted for a maximum amount of time of 2 hours. Be careful to pay attention to your time because you will get a ticket. Parking patrol is everywhere and put a yellow mark on your tire and the street to see if the car has moved.

DRIVE. Yes, driving is the best mode of transportation here. :-))

Tucked away amongst the tall trees along the enchanting Central Coast, Carmel Village is packed with many lovely galleries, shops, pubs and wonderful places to eat! So I guess, having a car will make your life that much more convenient huh? :-) O.K., I hope I've at least convinced you to BEG, BORROW or STEAL a car. Oops! I didn't mean it that way.... but I'm sure you know where I'm coming from!

  • We travelled down by car on Highway 1 from San Francisco on our wau south to Los Angeles.

Parking can sometimes be difficult in Carmel, parking is allowed on the streets but time limits are enforced. I also think visitors should be considerate towards the people who live whereever you are visiting. Yes, they do well economically from tourists, but at the same time you have to be mindful of where you park, especially in a small place like Carmel.

Parking lots can be found at Sunset Centre and Carmel Plaza.

Public restrooms can be found in the small park in the middle of Carmel and in the shopping centre.

There is only one taxi company in Carmel - The Yellow Cab - Telephone No. 624-3885

Bicycles can be rented from Bay Bike Rentals - Telephone No. 625-2453, which is situated on Lincoln Street between 5th and 6th.

Carmel is along the coast on highway 1. It is about 200 km (124 miles) south from San Francisco. My trip went further along the coast to San Simeon. From Carmel to San Simeon is another 160 km (100 miles).

  • On weekends and holidays Ocean Ave backs up coming into carmel...take Rio Road or Carpenter..if you do take Ocean..get off take a side street and zig-zag your way through...it all goes down-hill to the sea anyway. Don't be a sheep.

The world famous 17 mile drive is a private toll road and is located throughout the Pebble Beach and Del Monte Forest area of Carmel. It is one of the most beautiful sights to visit, with the landscapes of land and sea meeting each other in rocky magnificence.

Within this area are world class golf courses, such as the Pebble Beach Golf Links, The Links at Spanish Bay,and Spyglass Hill Golf Course. Also to be seen is one of California's most photographed trees, the Lone Cypress. Many vantage stops are on the 17 mile drive with vistas that make you just gasp in awe.

More pictures of this magnificent drive is in my Carmel-by-the-Sea travelogue.

In 1769 the Spanish priest Father Junipero Serra set off on an expedition with Gaspar de Portola to found missions in New Spain (California). His main motivation was to Christianize the natives & to make them loyal subjects of Spain. San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo Mission is the 2nd in a chain of 21 missions located along the El Camino Real (the Royal Hwy in Spanish) from San Diego to Sonoma. They are spaced about 30 miles apart from each other or 1 days journey on foot or horseback. The Mission in Carmel was Father Serras favorite. He served as Presidente of the Missions there, died there & is buried there under the floor of the church. The Mission was founded in 1770 & is one of the oldest Spanish styled buildings in California.

During my first visit to Carmel, I got up very early and walked down the hill to the beach and Pacific Ocean. That particular day the waves were extremely high--10 to 15 feet - and were roaring in like the sound of a freight train. The closer I got, the colder the air became. It was a very powerful sight. I've been to the beaches along California's coast many times since then, but haven't seen waves as high and as forceful as they were that morning.

San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo Mission, 1771, is the site of The Carmel Mission Basilica and National Shrine of Blessed Junipero Serra, who founded the California Missions and is buried in the Church. Peaceful is the word of the entire grounds that overlook the sea with the hill top view of mountains to the inland side, making a visit to these grounds a must when in the Carmel area.

Tours are given as well as self-guided tours of the entire grounds. I found the museum and buildings to be well worth a stop alone, but combined with the historic background and the burial site of the founder, I believe it to be very educational and emotional as well, no matter what faith or belief you may have. Check out their website for all the facts and figures regarding this Mission.
