Carmel is (not surprisingly) a quiet town, so the nightlife is limited. But no town is complete without a nice, local dive bar (and I mean that in the best of ways). Check out Sadie's on Lincoln and Ocean. Its a fun, small bar with a local crowd, and it good during the day, too. Chances are they'll know you're a tourist, so don't be surprised if they 'haze' you a bit. Unfortunately, Clint Eastwood's bar - the Hog's Breath Saloon - has been closed down. Mr. Eastwood used to be mayor of Carmel. Leave a Comment Theme: Eating and Drinking

Carmel is a very quiet town where the residents pride themselves on living in an exclusive community of upper class individuals. Carmel has some AMAZING restaurants that you can visit, but you definitely will not find the raucous party atmosphere anywhere. The perfect place to enjoy a quiet evening. :) Theme: Eating and Drinking

While nightlife for me these days usually consists of walking off dinner, I did discover that Carmel has a number of bar/pubs in town. Strangely, most can be found between 5th and 6th Streets. Hogs Breath - San Carlos b/w 5th and 6th Red Lion - Dolores bw 5th & 6th Jack London's Hrill & Tap Room - Delores bw 5th & 6th Bully III Steakhouse and Pub - Dolores & 8th Leave a Comment Theme: Eating and Drinking

by Ewingjr98 Big Dog's closed in summer 2008, but was replaced by Bently's British Pub... the 6th British pub in the Monterey area by my count (London Bridge, Crown and Anchor, Britannia Arms, Mucky Duck, and Bulldogs plus Penny Farthing in Salinas). They have two happy hours a night (5-7 pm and 10 pm- midnight) and big 20 ounce pints, but the kitchen closes at 9pm. For a rich, quiet, and often boring town like Carmel, there are a surprisingly large number of sports bars including Brophy's, Ocean Sports Bar and Grill, and Big Dogs Sports Restaurant. Big Dogs, in the Barnyard Shopping Center, is one of the Peninsula's few sports bars, but like most of the other sports bars around its has only a handful of small to medium sized TVs. Probably their best feature is the big outdoor deck overlooking parts of the shopping center. Inside they have maybe 6 or 8 TVs including one nice flat screen in the middle of the small room. The bar has just a few stools and the seating area has only 6 tables or so. The place is really not much of a sports bar, it's just too small to be real comfortable, and the location in a shopping center ensures it will never be too lively. We had three beers there for just $3 each, so the prices are better than most places in the area. They also have food, that we didn't get a chance to try.

Brophy's is a small but very clean and modern sports bar in the heart of Carmel (it used to be called Kinger's Sports Bar and before that the Fourth Avenue Pasta House). It features a nice L-shaped bar with a wide variety of liquors, 3 or 4 flat-screen TVs, and is decorated with numerous golf photographs from courses around the world. Food is the typical bar burgers, fries, and wings with a few other specialties, and they have perhaps six beers on tap including a few locals from the English Ales Brewery in Marina. We spent about an hour here from about midnight until 1am on a Friday. The bar was relatively quiet except for the big table in the middle of the room that had about eight people playing dice. It's a nice, enjoyable spot, and would certainly make a good place to watch the game or just for some quiet conversation late at night. Clint Eastwood's former restaurant, the Hog's Breath Inn, is a nice place in downtown Carmel to spend an evening with friends. The outdoor atmosphere is perfect in the summer, and is warm even on cooler nights due to the five or six natural gas fireplaces plus a handful of electric heaters. Beers are around $5 each and options include Carmel Wheat, Gordon Biersh, Sierra Nevada, Bass, Guinness, Anchor Steam and more. They also offer wines by the glass and bottled beer. We enjoyed a nice visit here one evening with friends from the area and a few rounds of beer. The outdoor area was perhaps half full, but on this chilly night, it seemed most people were in the cabin at the bar. This is a pretty popular place that is open after most restaurants in town have long since closed.
