 | Carmel-by-the-Sea Restaurants | Tips 1 - 10 of 72 | | I am updating this tip as I had the chance to go back to this place, when we last visited the area. This experience was not as good as the first, but some things are still the same, such as the atmosphere, which is really great. The place looks nice, all in wood, which I am used to coming form northern Europe and living in the Netherlands, but still very nice. The service was extremely friendly and efficient and the food was very good. We had hamburgers and they were really juicy and tasteful. They also serve dinner until 12.30 a.m., which was very nice as we arrived after 10.30. We ate outside the second time and it was a beautiful, quiet day (not that Carmel seems to get very hectic, in any case, which is nice). However, this time service was a bit slow as the waitress only came out to see us every 10-15 minutes. We had the burgers again, but this time, I was not very satisfied as my was quite burned, so I had to ask for another one. I eventually got another one but even then it was a bit to dry for my taste. In any case, the waitress apologized and was very friendly, so I will just assume it was a bad day. I will probably eat there again if I go back, but for now, I have changed the satisfaction rating just a notch.
Great hamburgers. Marinus is one of those restaurants you must include on a trip to Carmel-by-the-Sea, if you LOVE, not like, gourmet. Located in Carmel Valley, only a few minutes drive from the town, is the secret wine district of California. Here, in the Valley, lies the Marinus at Bernardus Lodge which showcases California-French cuisine, and the recipient of the Grand Award from Wine Spectator. Cal Stamenov, Executive Chef, has not only award winning dishes to offer, but on meeting us, table side, he also possesses a winning smile. He is missed in Los Angeles and was at the now closed Citrus. Treasured by all who enjoy gourmet dining, Cal creates dishes with intriguing sauces. Please go to the Marinus at Bernardus Lodge if you are looking for that little bit of heaven taste in food.
One must sample a little of each dish to truly understand the mindset of Chef Cal, but he has a way with duck and fois-gras. His handling of veal is divine. The sauces used with his creations are all Chef Cal Stamenov's recipes, and top notch, at that. You should not go wrong, driving to the Lodge to experience the gourmet dishes at Manirus. Tell the Chef, I sent you. Au revoir. A delightful restaurant, noted for its famous scones and homemade pies. Built in 1927, the historic Tuck Box symbolizes the uniqueness and charm of Carmel-by-the-Sea. Open for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea, the scones are the highlight to a meal of Eggs Benedict or a Shepherd's pie. The recipe at the Tuck Box for scones is from northern Scotland and is light in texture when compared to the traditional English delight.
The Tuck Box has daily specials and being there on a Saturday, one can be treated to the famous Tuck Box English Pot Roast, steeped in herbs and red wine, served with mashed potatoes. Yummy!!! Bahama Billy's sets the mood for good times even before you enter with the Caribbean themed decor. Once in the entrance, the ambiance is pure tropical fun with the life-size piano player and funky framed tropical setting paintings. The wait staff is very upbeat and friendly. Always ready to please you with service and great dishes, from blackened Mahi Mahi to crispy Coconut Prawns. As the name implies, steakhouse, the Teriyaki Skirt steak to Filet Mignon are available. Caribbean Lobster Tail combined with Filet Mignon is a house specialty. The Crab Mango Bisque is a smooth, creamy delight. The thrill of it all is the large bread container that is filled with sliced portions of the house special Hot Calypso Cheese bread. The Ultimate meatloaf is on the menu for that down home taste sensation. Those with a salad in mind, have six offerings with the Chopped Chicken Mango Salad a true winner. But, before you start all of this, the Paradise "Puu-Puu" Platter is a must for the big eaters at your table. Inside and outside dining are available. Bahama Billy's is a must visit for dining while in Carmel and it is right down the road at the Barnyard Shopping Village, located at the start of Carmel Valley. Chef-Owner Tony Momo is there to greet you at the door. His owner-wife April Momo may also be standing by to say hello.
Since I devoured the hot Calypso Cheese bread, dripping with melted butter and cheeses, you would think that this must be the favorite dish. No, the Paradise "Puu-Puu" Platter wins this award for not only taste, but quantity and presentation as well. Jamaican Jerk wings, jumbo crispy coconut prawns, BBQ spareribs, and blackened sesame Ahi (served rare & cool). This dish is pure satisfaction. This is a small place with delicious food. It has a lovely patio or outdoor dining. It's a favorite among locals and tourists alike. You may see a famous person there, I did. This restaurant, like all the buildings in Carmel is surrounded by flowers and trees. The Tuck Box has been pleasing patrons for over 60 years
The Tuck Box is known for their homemade scones, but the complete breakfasts are very good. Eggs, waffles, scones and a pot of hot tea are all delicious. And you can take home their preserves and spreads…orange marmalade, raspberry and olallieberry. The Tuck Box is one of a kind--originally a tea room, it is now open for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. The moment you see the front door, you are aware that this restaurant is going to be a gourmet experience. The ambience is upscale and the service is impeccable. Yes, I know this is a beach town, but I still wore a jacket. It fits the mood of the interior. Dinning at Anton & Michel is a true gourmet delight and I was not disappointed with the selection of dishes that I sampled. A reflection pool sits outside beyond the tables and the floor to ceiling windows. A wonderful open feel and reflects the town of Carmel. Charming.
The filet mignon was glazed with a perfect reduction of sauce bordelaise. Tender to the touch. The rack of lamb was tasty and cooked to perfection, medium-rare. A local Carmel Valley red wine completes the menu. Leave a Comment

THIS RESTAURANT NO LONGER EXISTS. I have left it in as a wonderful memory. PLEASE TRY "BILLY QUON'S VOLCANO GRILL & MAI TAI BAR in Carmel Valley. Same owner. Same great food. If you go into the Valley and stop for a bite at the Volcano Grill say hi to Billy Quon Lee from travelgourmet. Billy is one of the best restaurateurs around. At Bixby's the feature was Martinis and Kobe Beef Sliders at the bar. Where are you? The only Martini Bistro in town, in my opinion. Choose your favorite taste in food and Bixby just might have it. That's what is making this Bill Lee restaurant, the hot spot for dining in Carmel. Different strokes for different folks applies here. Great outside patio dining or inside the cozy main dining room or even at the modern bar, food is an experience at Bixby. The ambiance was in high gear with the mood lighting of the dramatic ceiling and the outstanding martini offerings by our expert swizzle stick martini bartendress, Lenor. The littlest items for palate pleasing are some of the best tastes as in the stuffed olive or bay shrimp cocktail offerings. Meat, chicken, fish, pasta, ribs and even enchiladas are part of the menu. How about a salad served in a large martini glass? Bixby has it and a whole lot more. Venture in for a lunch libation within the garden walkways of the Barnyard Shopping Complex. It makes the shopping in Carmel seem a lot easier and happier.
The Kobe Beef Sliders are a trio of seasoned Kobe beef mini burgers on house baked dill buns with onion jam, white cheddar, roma tomatoes, and a side of seasoned garlic fries. Combine this with a great martini, and the joint is jumping. As Bixby says on the tab, "Let's Get Stir'n & Shak'in". Walking around Carmel is a trip to yesteryear and slower times. Walking past Casanova's, at dinner time, is a crime. You must stop and smell the aromas of the night. This former home's (at least 60 years old) original floor plan is intact and a wine cellar and other rooms were added to make this a very romantic dining experience. There is also an outside patio open to dining. After being seated, a starter kit ( bread and little teasers of food) are placed before you and the fun begins. Dining is a pleasure and a cozy warm feeling of friendship prevails. Casanova does not disappoint in either food or wine. Your choices are many and I tasted several dishes, all delicious. I firmly suggest reservations if arriving between 6pm and 9pm.
The spinach gnocchi was to die for. Really! I have tried many gnocchi (potato dumplings) with different ingredients and this was by far the tastiest, smoothest, and most satisfying. Ole! That's what you will say as you discover this quaint Mexican restaurant hidden in the courtyard on San Carlos between 5th & 6th Streets. It is worth locating this gem for that cold margarita. The charm of Carmel is not lost in the courtyard or inside the Club Jalapeno. Small but cozy interior seating and tables surrounding the entrance are inviting. Jalapenos are hot peppers and the name of the restaurant says hot, hot, hot. Of course, you can order mild. Oaxaca is a town in Mexico that is now all the rave for regional dining experiences. The foods at Club Jalapeno reflect the taste of old Oaxaca. The only negative is that the chips and salsa are not included at your table but must be purchased. It stands to reason that a good margarita tastes better with chips and salsa, so this was a disappointment that chips & salsa were not included as complimentary.
The Oaxacan receipes give this Mexican restaurant a different flavor from the expected normal dishes. The Oaxacan Enchiladas with Oxacan Mole sauce (Mole sauce is what makes Oaxaca so famous "thick, sweet, smokey overtones and dried chile heat") is the house favorite and is great alone but add a margarita for the full Ole! Carmel is filled with so many great sounding restaurants it was hard to choose where to dine out when we had one night only. We decided to go to the latest place the locals seemed to be raving about (well in the Carmel magazine in our hotel room anyway), Cantinetta Luca. This is a modern Italian restaurant and bar, apparently more San Francisco style than Carmel. The large restaurant was full and I think we were very lucky to walk in and get a table without having made a reservation.
Cantinetta Luca specialises in antipasti, and cure many of the meats on the premises. After reading this on the menu, we decided to start with the Artisan and House Made Salume, along with some Caseficio Gioia Burrata Cheese and some bread. The generous servings were well presented and loved most of the meats, which went so well with the cheese (which was up-sold to us by our helpful waitress). For main course we had the Tagliatelle, Chanterelle Mushrooms, Organic Peas and Pecorino Toscano Cheese and the Grilled Baby Octopus, Salame Calabrese, Broccoli and Potatoes (starter size). Both dishes were very flavoursome and plates were cleaned. We shared a Chocolate & Hazelnut Tart for dessert. Leave a Comment
