The Carmel Roasting Company has 4 locations in Carmel. The shops are small but the coffee and teas are delicious. The staff seems to be well-trained in making a specialty espresso drink (I've never had a bad one). The coffeehouse also serves sandwiches, packs picnic baskets for 2 or 4 people and has a variety of tasty baked goods on hand (selections change daily). Coffee beans are also sold by the pound.
They do a great Chai Latte. I love it!

When I was in Carmel, I wanted to go to a seafood restaurant. and I found Flaherty's. There are actually two parts to the restaurant. One is more of a formal area (with an aquarium :-P), and there is another less formal area with oyster bar (without aquarium :-D). Since it was too early for the more formal room, I ate where the oyster bar is at one of the several tables there. The menus for both sides are exactly the same, so it makes no difference where you sit really. It just depends what type of ambiance you want while you eat. The "formal" side seemed a bit boring for me. I am a relaxed and laid back type and the oyster bar side suited me just fine. The menu had a pretty good selection and also offered farm raised abalone, which I had never had before. Overall it was a good restaurant. If I was ever back in Carmel I might go somewhere else just to explore and see what I might see. If I couldn't find another place to eat that I thought would be good, I'd go back. Leave a Comment

Cozy with booths and flying fish models hanging from the ceiling. Make reservations for sure on the weekends!!!
The food here is Cal-Asian inspired. Instead of bread before dinner, they serve fried wontons with ginger salsa with minced tomatoes, cucumbers and cilantro! It was such an innovative idea and sooo good! Seared ahi with angel hair pasta in a soy based sauce with shiitake mushrooms was my fav! YUMMY!!!! I paired this with a local wine from Monterey and it was delicious!!! The Flying Fish Grill is a wonderful restaurant in the basement of the Carmel Plaza shopping area. The setting is dark and intimate with redwood booths (said to be built by the owner), ornate Balinese animals on the walls, and a cozy Asian feel. The staff is excellent ~ very efficient and geniunely interested in the guests. Seafood is the specialty of the house, but they offer other items such as steak as well. The only thing that would improve this restaurant would be hard liquor ~ they only serve beer and wine. The food is deliciously and creatively prepared. You will love it!
Our meal started with complimentary fried wonton chips with ginger salsa. Pan-fried almond-crusted sea bass with whipped potatoes, Chinese cabbage, and rock shrimp stir-fry is one of the suggested favorites and you will see why. It's incredibly good. My friend and I ordered this with a side of steamed vegetables to split so we could save room for desert. The desert is what my friend spoke about for the rest of the trip ~ tempora-style fried bananas with carmel sauce and ice cream. Very tasty! We had waited to visit Flying Fish until there a special occasion as it's location made us assume it would be an expensive evening. We headed over on a friend's birthday and discovered a gem of a restaurant in Carmel. The menu is quite extensive, focusing primarily on fresh seafood with an Asian twist (they call if California-Japanese style). We were pleased with the prices as well, about $25 a person including a shared appetizer and drink. The ambiance is rustic and comfortable. We sat in a side booth where our group had plenty of privacy. The service was excellent and very efficient. The owner/manager came by to check on us and overall our experience was wonderful.
The Clay Pot for 2 was a fun and healthy meal. We had the seafood option which consisted of sea bass, salmon, calamari, prawns and scallops that were cooked fondue-style. The pot was filled with a simple broth, noodles, tofu and a variety of vegetables. The dish was served with 2 dipping sauces. Katies was recommended by someone in Tiburon and I can see why it's so well known. Although the food can be a bit too much for us Brits the quality and selection was second to none. The kitchen is very busy and on full display so you can see whats going on. The service was exceptional.
We only ate the breakfast - the full american style breakfast with eggs, potatoes, bacon etc - it was the best! Leave a Comment Theme: BreakfastPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than average

My wife and I recently (11/22/2008) have had a very negative experience at Katy’s Place Restaurant in Carmel, CA, during which both the greeter and proprietor were exceptionally rude. Just as my wife and I were arriving at Katy’s (for a breakfast with some friends that were visiting the area), a pair of well dressed women arrived in an expensive vehicle, and stated that they were going to be a group of 5 (3 more people would be coming). The two women were immediately seated at a table of sufficient size. My wife and I entered just after them, and stated that we were going to be a group of 4 (awaiting our 2 friends). Despite their being a table open for 4 people, we were told that they would put us on a list and that they would have to wait outside for the rest of our party to arrive. I would not have minded that, except that the prior group (of 2 women, awaiting 3 additional) were treated so differently in the same circumstances. The greeter made this decision, but the proprietor (Edward Randall Bernett) was there next to her at the time. I asked why the 2 ladies ahead of us were seated, although they were waiting on 3 people, and my wife and I (who were in the same situation, waiting on 2 people) were not seated, particularly as there was an empty table for 4 in front of us. The proprietor asked us if I was a restaurateur, and I replied that I was not, but that they should not treat different customers differently. Neither he nor the greeter responded to that, but he said “you are right on the edge”. I replied that I am local and invited some guests, but that I would not choose their restaurant in the future. He replied that I am not welcome there, and my wife and I departed to go meet with our friends elsewhere. We went to Stillwater Cove instead, had a beautiful view, very peaceful, quiet and unhurried, excellent breakfast for 4 (including juice, coffee, the works) for $80, as well as a very polite and friendly reception, unlike at Katy’s. I highly recommend Stillwater Cove, and recommend _avoiding_ Katy’s. Other people at Yelp and TripAdvisor have had similar experiences at Katy's.

Little Napoli has great food and wonderful service, and the hosts and staff were very welcoming. I had to wait a little while for a table (it was a Saturday night) but they had benches right outside and just inside the entrance was a table and stools where you could wait also (with some complimentary wine, no less). The selection on the menu was very good, the prices were very reasonable, the food was delicious. Also, the wait staff would take care of each other's tables when necessary, which I did not see in most other area dining establishments I visited. All in all a great restaurant!
I think I had the Al Forno Sinatra (rigatoni with sausage, mushrooms, and cheese). It was excellent (and plentiful, as I recall). There were lots of good-looking choices on the menu, the other diners seemed to be enjoying their meals, so I think it would be hard to go wrong. This restaurant was recommended to us by the owner of a neighborhood gallery we knew. There's nothing like getting a rec from a local. Our lunch here was really good, as well as the service and atmosphere. Since this is Carmel, the menu is fresh and creative. You will likely find something prepared here you haven't thought of before. The restaurant has a small patio on the side that faces the street (it is relatively quiet street, 1/2 block off Ocean) as well as another outdoor patio in the back, as well as the indoor seating.
There are too many good things to mention, but I had a tasty smoked salmon sandwich. One thing that I thought was odd however, is that they served cheap mustard with the fancy burger one person in our group ordered. With everything else so thoughtfully prepared, why would Nico's put out bargain mustard?
