The staff was helpful, attentitive and patient. The meal we had was amazing from the wine, the Split pea soup, delicious salad to the entrees. We cannot remember the last time we had such a strong meal from beginning to end. The gnocchi is reason enough to visit Carmel and the daily special was mouth-watering. This is a precious place with authentic flavors, amazing atmosphere and non-pretentious staff.
Gnocchi in gorgonzola sage cream sauce...what else can I say?

Cute little restaurant with a large fireplace in one room. Very romantic and the service was terrific! Quaint, just like most of the other restaurants in this great little town!!! :)
I had an AMAZING crabmeat ravioli dish in some sort of a cream sauce with scallops! It was sooooo yummy!!!! Probably the best I've ever had! Theme: ItalianPrice: US$21-30 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: San Carlos St. & Ocean Ave.Phone: 831-624-6545

My mother grew up in Carmel, so when we took her back for a visit, we ate lunch at The Cottage. I had the Salad Sampler (too much to eat at one sitting so I took over half home for supper!) which was fabulous. My sisters and mother had the Artichoke soup that she had told us about for years. Mom remembers when Carmel Valley was all Artichoke fields. Good food and well worth the trip! For dessert we all had the gingerbread with lemon sauce. Now i know where Mom learned to make it!
The Artichoke soup is a local thing since the Salinas Valley is the artichoke capital of the world. Leave a Comment

This restaurant is quite famous in Carmel and it was recommended in some travel guides, but I was not very impressed. To start we were seated next to a table with some very loud wannabe musicians and, although that is not the restaurant's fault, we could probably have been given a table in a different area. It was very disturbing after a while as we had problems even hearing each other. Service was extremely slow. We waited about 10 minutes after we were seated just for the waitress to come along. After we ordered, the drinks took an additional 10-15 minutes to arrive and the food another 15-20 minutes... We had been in the restaurant over 45 minutes before we started eating. We had the "Bucket of steamers" clams and mussels, but they were not very tasty. We then had the rib-eye and the Filet Mignon, both were pretty plain, I have had much better than this. After all the waiting, we decided to skip the dessert and just pay and leave. The bill was about $70 for 2, which is not exactly cheap for what we had. I think the restaurant is a bit overrated. It has apparently been voted "Best outdoor dining" every year since 1993, but I am not sure the competition is very fierce. Leave a Comment

Authentic French restaurant. Stuffy and very uppity ambience, but GREAT food and service.
Magret de Canard. YUMMY!!!!!! If you are craving REAL French food, not this whole "fusion" stuff, then this is IT!!!

We were only in Carmel-by-the-Sea for a couple of days so had no chance of trying out all the eateries but where we did eat was well above the average. We had both our evening meals at the Hogs Breath Inn - previously owned by Clint Eastwood (I believe he still lives here and I can see why!) There is a lovely almost British style bar and a friendly, cosey restaurant with fires going and a wonderful courtyard. Set back from the main street it seems incredibly popular compared with some of the restaurants we passed on the way. I loved the food. It was good, old fashioned comfort food like steak, chops, ribs etc and there was a good selection of beer and wine.
The pork chops were to die for. Pork in the US is far better than anything we have here - oh, and the Potato gratin/dauphinoise. I'm not a great fan of anything cream coloured or with white sauce but this was a baptism of fire and I am now trying to recreate this dish at home - in fact I'm drooling thinking about this meal! by Lhenne1 After an afternoon of wandering the streets of Carmel, my friend and I were ready for a beer and a snack. We spotted A.W. Shucks, an Oyster bar, saw some TVs playing a baseball game and headed in. The restaurant is small, with a long bar and about 7 or 8 high-top tables. The feel is relaxed and fun, not the stuffy sense you're used to in Carmel. Our waitress was very friendly and we ordered a dozen oysters on the half shell ($19) and a fried seafood platter with calamari, shrimp and fish ($11). We each also had a beer form the fairly extensive beer selection, which range in price from $3.75 to $5.00. I'm a big oyster fan, so I was quite happy when our plate came. There were 3 types on hand (Chesapeake, Effingham, and Hood) and we had 4 of each. They were fresh and served on ice. I look forward to heading back to A.W. Shucks. It's the first place I've found in town where I'd like to simply "hang out".
Oysters on the half shell. Get a dozen for $1.50 each during happy hour. Theme: SeafoodPrice: US$21-30 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Ocean Ave between San Carlos & DoloresPhone: 831.624.6605

Casanova at night by rjweber21 OK, these guys really think they’re hot stuff…and pretty much, they are. On a recent trip to Carmel my parents decided that Casanova had just become too much; too cocky, too expensive, too full of themselves. My parents tried a different restaurant, and it paled in comparison to the food at Casanova. Sooooo, even though the Sommelier thinks he’s hot stuff, and the manager literally walks around the front dining room saying to whoever will listen, “It’s hard, it’s just so hard when you’re this good.” He told me and my wife, “Welcome to paradise.” I don’t think this guy owned the restaurant, but he claimed to have worked there 20 years. In the restaurant business, I believe they call that a “lifer.” At any rate, my wife and I had lunch there on our last trip, and although the above features of this restaurant could be annoying, the food really does make up for it. I had some spinach gnocci that was the second best I’ve ever tasted (I’ve eaten a lot of gnocchi). We also had the Artichoke, goat cheese appetizer – if you like these ingredients, you’ll love this appetizer. A COOL feature of this restaurant is that its “house” wine actually is made by the owners, and they do it more than adequately. This was the first time I ate here for lunch, and I think I like it better than the dinner. Fewer people, better service: Cheaper. You should plan on eating here once during your trip to Carmel

Em Le's in Carmel by GUYON This is one of the oldest restaurants in Carmel. It is open daily from 6:30AM. Early bird hours : 6:30AM-8:30AM / 5PM-6:30PM The room is small with 10 only tables. It is the meeting point of the Camel inhabitants who come there to take the breakfast before going to the post office to take their mail. There a free street parking limited at 90 min. Ask for the key to go to the toilet, but only after eating....
Prime rib How did the waiter make to know I am French ? He proposed me a bottle a Bordeaux. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Dolores between 5 and 6thPhone: (831)625.6780Directions: In the city center
