This Japanese seafood restaurant is owned and operated by Kenny Fukumoto. His specialties include seared ahi tuna, pan fried sea bass, sushi, and the huge cook-at-your-table vats of seafood or beef. Furthermore, the service here is some of the best I've ever had anywhere. Four of us dined here, and despite reservations, we were stuck back in the far corner of the restaurant near the cool and breezy restroom and kitchen area. We had one of the Japanese-style semi-private booths with two tables behind a short wall, sharing a single opening for the wait staff. We started with beer and wine, then had a few of the tasty appetizers. Two of us had fish dishes (I wish I could remember what) and two of us shared the huge seafood stew that is prepared at the table. This was a big vat of a watery broth full of veggies over a propane fire, with a platter of raw seafood on the side, including clams, oysters, shrimp, scallops, a few pieces of fish, and more. You cooked the fish in the stew during the meal, making for a pretty authentic Asian experience (at least from what I remember in Korea!). Our desert was a green tea sundae, that was way better than it sounds! The total bill for the four of us, including a bottle of wine, was around $120--the prices are very good for Carmel, I guess average for the Monterey area. Not the fanciest or most romantic place in Carmel, it has an older feel, with a cheaply constructed look. None-the-less, it is cozy and comfortable. Open until 10 pm. Reservations are usually required. Need a quick fix of food or sugar rush? Well, Carmel Bakery is your answer for the lower priced food bin in Carmel-by-the-Sea. A little bit of everything, like what someone might want quickly and at a decent price. Don't plan on sitting down and having a gourmet meal. It is what it is. I found the candied apples drew me inside and that's what I walked out with, well it was a chocolate covered apple. It was tasty, did the job of quelling my hunger and I moved on. They do have bakery goods here and coffee, sandwiches, etc. No fast food restaurants in Carmel but this comes close.
A candied apple caught my eye in the window and I walked out with a chocolate, marshmallow, nut covered apple. Yummy! Leave a Comment

An outside courtyard is available between the main dining room and the pub building. Great setting - brick, multi-level flooring, walls painted with pastoral settings. Super atmosphere. Hearty food, great wine and beer selections. It's also a pet friendly restaurant and several people had their dogs at their feet. This restaurant was opened years ago by Clint Eastwood, actor, director, and former mayor of Carmel. Great spot for a relaxing meal and conversation.
Castroville Artichoke Soup - made from local artichokes. Salads were great. Other menu favorites - crab cakes, tuna melt, fish tacos, french dip sandwich, Dirty Harry Burger, and a roast turkey sandwich with cranberry-orange toasted pecan relish. Katy's Place is THE place for a great breakfast while visiting the Carmel area. We opted to sit out on the patio since the weather was very nice when we visited. There are over 13 kinds of Eggs Benedict served at Katy's, as well as many other breakfast items. The inside dining area can be very crowded, no reservations are accpeted. Be prepared for a wait on the weeknds.
The Dungness Crab Eggs Benedict, enough for 2 to share, served with Roasted potatoes. The Cheese Blintzes area also not to miss. Fresh OJ is served for breakfast at Katy's and the coffee is also great here.

We're on our way home from Monterey and planned to stop off in Carmel to spend some time. We looked around for a place to have breakfast and what luck! Found this quaint little place that must have been good because people were waiting to get in. Put our name on the list and waited about 10-15 minutes because we could sit down. It was worth it!
Tomato and mushroom eggs benedict. Half cottage potatoes and half fruit with my order. It was yummy and filling! My boyfriend had the Cottage special with eggs, chorizo and pancakes (Kathy cakes on the menu). Chorizo was a choice amongst bacon, sausage and some other meat.

This restaurant is owned by Clint Eastwood (or so we were told) and it has an amazingly relaxing view over the mountains and the sea, at the same time! We had come just for a drink and in order to enjoy the view and we did not eat here as there was some problem (I think the chef was ill, or something like that) and there was an "emergency menu" with only a few dishes. In any case, the place was packed as we were leaving, so I assume it is usually good. No matter if you want to eat here or not, the view alone is worth a visit, if you are in the "neighbourhood". Every time I end up in Carmel I find a new favorite restaurant... hence the name of my Carmel pages, "Carmel-by-the-Taste" rather than Carmel-by-the-Sea. My newest favorite Carmel restaurant in Tommy's Wok, a tiny Chinese place in central Carmel. I have been wanting to try this place ever since I heard they had dim sum for lunch, and I finally had a free Saturday where I could get out of bed early enough to try Tommy's Wok. We arrived in Carmel around 1pm and quickly found parking. I forgot where the restaurant was located so we stopped at a magazine rack and found the Carmel tourist brochure with the street map and restaurant listings: Mission between Ocean and Seventh Streets (don't forget Carmel doesn't have street addresses!). There we found Tommy's Wok, tucked down a tiny little alley precisely as indicated on the map. We were immediately seated at one of the restaurant's maybe 10 tables, back by the kitchen. They started us off with house green tea (when will American places learn to serve complimentary beer?). We looked over the menu for about 2.3 seconds before deciding on dim sum. Our first item we attempted to order was the onion pancakes, but there were out; bad start! We then ordered the mixed dumplings and the shrimp stuffed tofu off the $4.50 dim sum menu and the sweet sesame mung bean puff and the BBQ pork buns off the $3.50 dim sum menu. Our service began with the expensive dishes; the shrimp stuffed tofu was unbelievably flavorful and tasty, certainly the best part of our meal. The sesame puffs were also interesting and flavorful, but a little too chewy and annoying. Our next dish, the mixed dumplings, was spectacular, with four different concoctions of flavorful mixtures. Finally, we ended with the king of dim sum, the BBQ pork buns; they were slightly sweet and flavorful, like I remember from Hong Kong. Our total bill for two was only $15, amazingly inexpensive for Carmel. This is an outstanding little restaurant! I had not had a lot of time to research where to eat in Carmel but had a few recommendations. When we asked our hotel about choices, they agreed that we had to try Casanova. Advertised as the most romantic restaurant in Carmel, I was expecting something more stuffy then I found. In fact, the only thing/person I found stuffy was the sommelier. People were dressed casually (khakis, sun dresses, etc) and the waitstaff was very friendly (living in the midwest I am used to friendly, talkative service). We sat outside on the fountain patio. I was worried about it being too chilly but there were heat lamps all over the place. I also thought that maybe this place was a big tourist destination. However, I have since found out that many of my colleagues from our San Jose office love to dine here. We have even hosted some dinners at the restaurant.
The food is a combination of French and Italian. We had a lot of food. It was a 3 course menu with a choice of the 2nd course (salads, escargot, etc) and main entree. And then there was dessert- warm chocolate cake with chocolate sauce coming out of it - quite heavenly. They start you out with some tapenade and peppers. Be warned that the wine list while extensive (reportedly has over 30,000 wines) is very pricey. The majority of wines were well over $100. And they did not have a lot of wines from Central Coast/Paso Robles area- lots from Napa and Sonoma. Lunch: 11a-3p, Dinner: 5p-10p, Brunch: 10a-3p Sun Leave a Comment

The Mission Ranch is a beautiful old farm alongside the old Carmel Mission... you get the basis of the name I'm sure. On the grounds you will find an inn, a restaurant, two barns for functions, tennis courts, a health club, and more. We made a trip to the restaurant, but were impressed by the simultaneous weddings in the barns. We had a wonderful dinner at the Mission Ranch. They don't take reservations, so we arrived around 7:15 pm and were told we'd have an hour to wait. We quickly found two seats at the bar and had a drink apiece (house pinot $7.50 & Great White, Anchor Steam, and other draft beers about $5 each), and our table was ready in about 30 minutes. Our meal started with the house garlic bread, and we ordered the fresh oysters (six for $11). For entrees I quickly decided on the prime rib with twice baked garlic potatoes ($28) and Laura immediately selected the duck with mashed potatoes ($23). For desert we had the just-sweet-enough bread pudding with whipped cream ($7) and two cups of regular coffee ($2 each). The service was excellent despite the restaurant being packed, the food was great, and the piano entertainment that began around 8:30 or 9:00 was very popular. Leave a Comment

A.W. Shucks is my new favorite restaurant in Carmel. A prime location on Ocean Avenue, a great little interior, and awesome seafood, what more could you ask for? Located on Ocean Avenue right in the center of Carmel, this might be the best restaurant spot in town. A.W, Shucks is a quick little stroll from about 50 art galleries, not to mention the other little shops and restaurants. Its only minor inconvenience might be the lack of nearby parking options. Inside, this is what any good bar should be. A beautiful hardwood bar sets the scene, and they make the best of their small location with about 10 high-top tables of various sizes and stools. The table tops are a unique slate tile, and the front of the bar a nice copper sheeting. Even better the oysters are on display at the entrnace, and the cooking area is right in the front of the restaurant next to the bar. Half of the maybe 16 bar seats are regular drinking bar seats, while the other half are at the oyster bar. The most interesting feature is the hidden entrance to the restrooms that blends right into the back wall. Its only problem is the three small TVs that are not the best for sports viewing. Meals here are tasty, well priced, and simple but fresh. We had a dozen oysters ($19) that included three types of flavorful shell fish: Chesapeake oysters from the Chesapeake Bay, Hood Canal oysters from Puget Sound in Washington, and Effingham oysters from British Columbia. To go with our oysters, we had the fried seafood platter ($17) with shrimp, octopus, a tasty whitefish and fries. Sauces included vinegar, cocktail sauce, horseradish, and a mild tartar sauce. Absolutely wonderful food! Other options on their menu include cioppino, seafood chowders, crab cakes, seafood appetizers, and burgers. Open daily 11:00 to 8:30.
