Father & Son lighting up by travelgourmet OK. I know many of you will not like this tip, but for a reminder of the past and for those brave souls that dare the slings and arrows of others, read on. This is a full line tobacco shop with many brands and sizes of cigars. David is the man behind the counter to assist you in finding the cigar of your choice. Great choices in accessories as well, lighters, cutters, and humidors. In my opinion, cigar smoking is not a habit nor bad for your health. It is a form of relaxing in a refined gentlemanly way. There is a bond amongst cigar smokers, a comaraderie, and that's not blowing smoke in your eyes.
Most quality cigars range in price from $6.00 to $10.00 depending on size and shape. If you visited Carmel before then you might have found The Bountiful Basket at the Barnyard Shopping Complex, but the times they are a changin' and now they have moved to the center of Carmel-by-the-Sea being located on San Carlos SW of Ocean Ave. The Bountiful Basket is a delightful stroll through the wines of the region all in one location. Sharon Cuneo, the owner, is most likely going to be in to help you with your purchases or to share the qualities of a wine. Wine tasting is available and many times a owner of a vineyard is present to discuss and sample the winery's wares. I was fortunate enough to have been here on the day that Pianetta Winery in San Miguel, near Paso Robles, California, was uncorking some fine wines. How can you resist buying when you see the passion of the vine on the person's face. On select Saturdays, "meet the winemaker" series is held from 2-6pm at The Bountiful Basket.
Wine from the region, and also a stop at the tasting table. Gourmet foods and gift baskets are the specialty. The newest entry from this very talented owner is home made vinegars. The bottles themselves are worthy of keeping out on the table and there is a sampling table for both the vinegars and olive oils that are available for purchase. CLOSED DOWN BUT THE MEMORY IS WORTH SAVING. OK. You are in Carmel with the beauty of the ocean and pines putting your mind into relax mode, then shopping hits the brain waves. Want to feel like you got away to the Tropics? Then head on over to the Barnyard Shopping Complex. Not only are the grounds filled with plants and flowers blooming at every turn, the shops are worth looking into and purchasing that find of the year. One shop in particular has you believing that you have been transported to the tropics. Bahama Billy's is a great tropical restaurant in the Barnyard and across the path sits the Bahama Billy's Art & Gift Gallery. Pure paradise shopping. Everything from a pair of chopsticks to a beautiful piece of tropical art by the renowned artist, Steven Barton. If you are looking for a tropical fun gift or an exquisite work of art, then head to Bahama Billy's Art & Gift Gallery.
Anything tropical is here. They even had the tropical drink, Mojito, bottled blend of mint and sugar water, which I could not pass up. My find of the day was a Rhythm Jam miniature 5 piece band that has individual members playing in time to the music, which includes 20 all-time hits. I could not take my eyes off of them. They had me with the first beat. Colorful plates and dishware abound throughout the gallery. Fun to just explore or purchase your find of the day. We spent time browsing in shops along Carmel's main street, Ocean Avenue, and one shop that particularly caught my eye was the Cottage of Sweets. Ok, I know what you're thinking, but honestly it caught my eye because of the unusual architecture of the building, not because of what was housed inside it.
That said, after admiring the sloping, moss-covered roof of the cottage, we did nip inside for a quick look and may well have ended up making a few purchases. There was a large and tasty looking array of chocolates and sweets on offer and after some important research I can confirm that their chocolate honeycomb is tasty. Leave a Comment

Delightful storefront by travelgourmet Walking down the main street, Ocean Ave, at the Pine Inn Carmel sits a little bit of France. The Pierre Deux has imported many items from all the regions of France and has a display that invites you to look, touch, and buy.
Linens, kitchen supplies, foods, and furniture seem to be the sought after items. I personally prefer the jams of France to purchase. The Barnyard and the Crossroads are two upscale shopping malls/plazas catering to the people who actually live in Carmel. They have such necessities as a Safeway grocery store and banks, but also some of the area's good restaurants, and unique shops. The Barnyard also has one of the Peninsula's few sports bars, called Big Dogs (Closed in late 2008!), but like most of the other sports bars around its has only a handful of small to medium sized TVs. The Barnyard Shopping Village (http://www.thebarnyard.com/) is an outdoor boutique mall with the buildings uniquely constructed to resemble barns. Its stores consist of 8 restaurants, 2 cafes, 4 art galleries, and 34 retail and service oriented businesses. The Barnyard Shopping Village is located one mile south of Carmel-by-the-Sea, off of Highway 1 and Carmel Rancho Blvd. Crossroads Shopping Village (http://www.crossroadsshoppingvillage.com/) is perhaps best known for its restaurants including the Rio Grill and Sea Harvest (also with locations in Monterey & Moss Landing), it also has around 50 boutique shops offering everything from clothes to flowers and cigars. This partly indoor, partly outdoor mall is located at the intersection of Highway 1 and Rio Road, just a block away from the Barnyard. Leave a Comment

So I'm not usually the type to suggest visiting a mall while you're traveling. Actually, I usually avoid them even where I live. That being said, Carmel Plaza is a small mall with a pretty courtyard and a lot of character. When you enter Carmel Plaza, you'll see large trees, flowering ground cover and a tranquil overal decor. A little fountain called "The Fountain of Woof" flows through a little garden and empties into a little pond low enough for your pooch to grab a drink. Seats surround a fire pit so you can enjoy a cup of coffee or cocoa from the nearby coffeeshop on a chilly evening. Shops are up-scale and include Anthrolpologie, Tiffany and Sur la Table. One of the best restaurants in Carmel, Flying Fish, is located on the bottom level.
The high-end stores can be quite pricey, but you can find sale items as in any mall.

We did a bit of window shopping, but we also went into a shop selling golfing equipment, just a few doors away from the Hogs Breath Inn (sorry I cant remember the name of the shop). You would have thought in an area like this where there are such elite golf clubs that the prices would have been sky high, but my husband bought a sweater with 'Pebble Beach' Golf Club logo on, and it wasnt expensive at all. Don't you just love candy shops? Well who wouldn't. It's candy! This one is pretty much your typical candy shop with a very wide variety of fudge. They also had a very big selection of licorice. I hate licorice, so I immediately turned and ran. But with the glimpse that I saw, I could tell they had a very large selection of licorice items. Okay, okay. Just kidding. They actually have over 50 licorice items. Another good thing I found here was a map of the business district of Carmel. There are a lot of shops in Carmel, so there is a lot of information stuffed onto the map, but it is worth having.
