Near Spyglass Hill Golf Course by travelgourmet The world famous 17 mile drive is a private toll road and is located throughout the Pebble Beach and Del Monte Forest area of Carmel. It is one of the most beautiful sights to visit, with the landscapes of land and sea meeting each other in rocky magnificence. Within this area are world class golf courses, such as the Pebble Beach Golf Links, The Links at Spanish Bay,and Spyglass Hill Golf Course. Also to be seen is one of California's most photographed trees, the Lone Cypress. Many vantage stops are on the 17 mile drive with vistas that make you just gasp in awe. More pictures of this magnificent drive is in my Carmel-by-the-Sea travelogue. San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo Mission Entrance by cnango, 1 more photos In 1769 the Spanish priest Father Junipero Serra set off on an expedition with Gaspar de Portola to found missions in New Spain (California). His main motivation was to Christianize the natives & to make them loyal subjects of Spain. San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo Mission is the 2nd in a chain of 21 missions located along the El Camino Real (the Royal Hwy in Spanish) from San Diego to Sonoma. They are spaced about 30 miles apart from each other or 1 days journey on foot or horseback. The Mission in Carmel was Father Serras favorite. He served as Presidente of the Missions there, died there & is buried there under the floor of the church. The Mission was founded in 1770 & is one of the oldest Spanish styled buildings in California. by Sandi-2004 During my first visit to Carmel, I got up very early and walked down the hill to the beach and Pacific Ocean. That particular day the waves were extremely high--10 to 15 feet - and were roaring in like the sound of a freight train. The closer I got, the colder the air became. It was a very powerful sight. I've been to the beaches along California's coast many times since then, but haven't seen waves as high and as forceful as they were that morning. Leave a Comment

San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo Mission, 1771, is the site of The Carmel Mission Basilica and National Shrine of Blessed Junipero Serra, who founded the California Missions and is buried in the Church. Peaceful is the word of the entire grounds that overlook the sea with the hill top view of mountains to the inland side, making a visit to these grounds a must when in the Carmel area. Tours are given as well as self-guided tours of the entire grounds. I found the museum and buildings to be well worth a stop alone, but combined with the historic background and the burial site of the founder, I believe it to be very educational and emotional as well, no matter what faith or belief you may have. Check out their website for all the facts and figures regarding this Mission. Golfing in the Monterey Bay by shivan I was conscious that the real travel would have started once we would have left San Francisco heading east towards the Yosemite National Park, and so I have lived the time spent in nice-but-not-incredibly-wonderful-at-all places with serenity and fatalism. Somebody told us that once you have driven through the Big Sur, nothing, in the 17 miles drive could ever impress you more. That was true. That road in the park, is nice, nothing more. typical Monterey citizen by shivan This road "runs" (15 miles speed limit) through a forest called Del Monte forest and a lovely rocky beach called the Pebble Beach. Reading a illustrative paper, I learnt that the area has been discovered in the 17th century by the spanish, but the first constructions did start early in the 20th century, including the inevitable Golf Course. The ecosystem is well preserved, as the presence of animals close to the road clearly shows. Leave a Comment

Scenic Views by shivan according the best american tradition of the Scenic Roads (you may find plenty of them in the United States of America), the 17-miles-drive is classified as Scenic. Along THIS Scenic Road (actually the 17 miles drive is worth being called Scenic Road, far more than others) is filled with parking areas to stop, have a break, and enjoy the landscape. Do it, the rocky profile of the Pebble Beach and surroundings deserve your attention. Leave a Comment

A shortish drive south of Carmel, along Highway 1, and you will find yourself in the Big Sur region. Big Sur is home to State Parks filled with redwood forests, stunning coastal scenery, secluded coves and beaches, and all manor of hiking trails for the active visitor. We spent a day driving along Highway 1, exploring a couple of the State Parks, visiting a pretty beach and even going on a short hike through the forest. We also saw the historic Bixby Bridge which makes a great photo subject. More information can be found on my Big Sur page. Leave a Comment

close encounters by shivan It is always a pleasure and a discovery to find wild animals hanging around close to human houses or cars. Ecosystem is intact in there, the area is filled also with big houses of rich people. Evidency of richness, underlined also by the large cars with which they drive. A lovely place to drive through. Don't miss this by shivan The warning here is: plan to reserve an appropriate amount of time to explore the area, if you decide to do. The common mistake (we obviously did) is to think "oh well, let's go there for this 17 miles and then head north!" Those are not common 17 miles, those are miles where to drive SLOWLY, especially if in column with other sleepers. Take at least 2 hours to do the things with calm. Leave a Comment
