Beautiful White Sand, Dangerous Surf
The white sands of Carmel attract tourists but the surf is particularly dangerous along the Carmel coastline. Take a walk along the beach, try to avoid the fly trap piles of seaweed tossed up by the tide, but stay out of the water. The turbulent surf tosses up beautiful sand, but the descent is rapid into the undertoe currrents. Like most places along the California coast, the water is a frigid temperature anyway. Surfers are actually relatively rare along the Carmel coast because of the strong cross currents and unpredictable wave patterns. Parking at the foot of Ocean Street is often difficult.
Unique Suggestions: At the foot of Ocean, take a left and park somewhere along the waterfront drive. Then, take off your shoes and enjoy the comfort of the glass free fine grain white sand. Put a toe into the water if you like, but avoid climbing into the water beyond that. Please don't trash the beach...
Fun Alternatives: Better beaches are generally found along the Santa Cruz side of the Monterrey Bay. Along this coast, the water is surprisingly warmer, the beaches more gradual in descent into the water, and the waves much more regular and easy to predict. See tips for this region's beaches, which are about 30 minutes away.

I've Included The Luxe Carmel Plaza in the tourist traps too and it can be considered a tourist trap if you are an el cheapo hehehe.
Carmel By The Sea has three strip malls located in the township and this strip mall called Carmel Plaza is the most luxe of them all. It is located at the Ocean Avenue and Mission St at the Downtown Carmel Area. The strip mall is small by other strip mall standards in major suburban centers but what it lacks in size, it pretty compensates for it on the sheer number of designer brands located in the property! Among the Luxe Brands at the Carmel Plaza include: Anthropologie, Bottega Veneta, Cole Haan, Cos Bar, Homescapes Carmel, J. Crew by the Sea, Khaki's of Carmel, Louis Vuitton, Sur la Table, Tiffany & Co., Tommy Bahama, Yves Delorme and more.
Mon-Sat 10 am - 6 pm
Sun 11 am - 5 pm
What to buy: depends on what you want but if you're an el cheapo then just window shop and take pictures around but if you're a serious shopper, be ready to use your credit card like buying Cole Haan Shoes for $ 200, Bottega Veneta Bags at $ 800 or Louis Vuitton Belts at $ 600 and more.
What to pay: maxxed out your platinum and titanium credit cards

Another photo of the beautiful coastline
Another beautiful view of the coast. This is certainly a tourist trap.... when you are here, you don't want to go. It is breathtaking beautiful this part of the coast. The rest of your travelplans are all mixed up, after you have been here. Because you probably want to stay here much longer than you planned for.
