Coffee at the Rogue Wave Cafe

by trvlrtom Written Jan 3, 2010

There are a few places to get coffee in town. This cafe stands out because of it's low key, friendly and informal local atmosphere. There are surf boards hanging from the ceiling, skate boards on the walls, along with some art work displayed. Check their web site for the music calendar.

While the general clientele is younger locals, everyone is friendly. You don't have to have tattoos to be welcomed here.

    Surfing in Cayucos

Cayucos is a low key surfing town. There are a few shops to buy gear, clothes and accessories, and great waves on the beach right in town, just steps away. Unlike some busier surfing places, there's no hassle finding a place to park or swarms of people on the beach.

A popular spot is immediately south of the pier, which is a great place to watch and take pictures.

This guy was using a paddle with his board.

    Walk the main drag

    Old time Cayucos

Cayucos is unlike other towns along the central coast of California. It's uniqueness is due to the fact that it hasn't been highly developed by tourism like other larger towns in the area - Pismo Beach, Morro Bay and Cambria. These towns have many restaurants, motels and B & B and everything that comes with the tourist trade. Cayucos has several motels and a few B & Bs, but none of the busy feel of the other towns. The locals still seem to outnumber the tourists here, and in a restaurant or bar you are likely to be greeted and even treated like a local. We went to one restaurant two nights in a row, and on the second night got a "locals'" discount on our bill without knowing that this price reduction existed.

For shopping, there are a few places for surf clothes and general items, along with some well stocked antique stores. In this photo is a 1949 car, still in use by a resident.

    Take a main st. stroll

    Funky artwork down Ocean Ave.

This won't take much time, but walk around the little main st area, which is only 2 blocks long, and check out some funky artwork that is displayed outside the shops. Their is a decent selection of restaurants, antique shops, and tourist trap stuff all around. This area has a nice laidback surfer type vibe. No hassles, just friendly locals.

    Cayucos beach

Cayucos is a beach town, and a primary activity here is to walk the lengthy beach. For the longest stretch, head south from the pier. There are several stairways leading back up into town along the way, so you can walk the beach one way and back through town if you prefer.

Like pretty much every other CA beachtown, Cayucos has a pretty damn impressive ocean sunset. Their soulful and free. So grab a cup of joe, or a glass of wine, and forget your troubles.
