Two Things You Need To Know About Living in Chico
When we were moving to Chico almost 10 years ago, the realtor who was showing us around told us there were two things we needed to know if we were going to live here:
First was, Chicoans say "a-mond," for "almond" (the "a" is pronounced like the "a" in "apple" and the "l" doesn't exist);
Second, Chicoans say "Esplan-aide," NOT "Esplan-ahd" ~ and there is no "The" in front of it. It's just "Esplanade"
Those two bits of advice have served us well for nearly 10 years!
Silver Dollar Fair
Every year during Memorial Day weekend, the city of Chico hosts the Silver Dollar Fair. The fair starts on a Friday, and ends on a Monday. There is a $10 fee to enter the fair, which covers all events. Food and rides cost extra. The fair holds a pig, photo, and art contest, which you can enter for a chance to win a cash prize. The fair also holds several spectator events, including motocross, hog racing, magic shows, and concerts. The schedule is usually posted online, a few weeks before the fair.
They usually have some bands play, one rock band, and one country band. Last year they had Blue Oyster Cult, and some country band. The concerts are great. The stage is small, so you won't get a crazy show, but you can get really close to the band. You can pay the $10 fee for the fair, and stand on the grass, or for $10 extra, you can buy a seat online. The seats are just chairs, and there aren't that many of them. They all cost $10, no matter where you sit, so you can sit right next to the state.
The only thing I didn't like was the atmosphere. People didn't bother to stand, but the show was good. I thought for such a small audience the band wouldn't try, but they were great. I also thought it would be a 30-40 minute concert, but they went well over and hour, and played into the night, even doing an encore. Definitely worth it.
I will definitely attend future concerts here.
This was the first time I attended this fair, since I'm not a huge fan of these things. The only reason I went, was to see Blue Oyster Cult, but the fair itself was also very cool, which I didn't expect. The rides looked really cool all lit up at night. I didn't go on any of the rides, but I did try some traditional American fair food. Just make sure you know what you're ordering. The menu wasn't very clear, and I thought I was order a bacon cheddar cheese burger, but it was fries with bacon and nacho cheese. They were good though.
We had some time to kill before the concert, so we also checked out the motocross, and art and photos. The motocross was lame. It was just a bunch of kids riding around the track. They didn't even do any tricks, but the art and photography was cool.
Some guy also had a monkey, that you could take your picture with.
The only problem is parking. Most people just park on the street, and walk. We ended up parking in a shopping plaza, and walking a few blocks to the fair.
I would definitely check this fair out, if you're gonna be in the area on Memorial Day weekend.

Chico being a college town, it can be a little wild, and skinny dipping is sort of a tradition among the residents.
Bear Hole, in Upper Bidwell Park is known for its skinny dipping, and topless bathing, in the warm months, May-October. College girls like come here with their girlfriends, or boyfriends, and bath topless. The girls usually just go topless, and very rarely go fully nude, but the spot is also popular with gay men, who like to go completely nude.
Although public nudity is illegal in Chico, law enforcement officers rarely give tickets. Being that this is a college town, the police here are a bit more relaxed about skinny dipping, so it is a popular activity. But there is no guarantee you'll see someone. If you do, try not to oggle.
I read that most skinny dipping in Chico takes place after dark, in other locations in the city. But Bear Hole is the most popular with day time skinny dippers.
If you want some privacy however, Bear Hole is not a good spot.
