Best Free Thing #1: Public Art Walk

by goodfish Written May 31, 2013

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I picked this little brochure up at the Visitor Center and took it along on my walkabouts of the island. Some of my favorite pieces were the unmentioned mosaics at Coronado High School - which may be difficult to see during summer, and be sure to check in at the office for permission to enter the grounds during the school year. The public library is also well worth a stop for its Wizard of Oz glass paintings, lovely reading room and Ramos Martinez murals. Sculptures, fountains and whatnot, it was nice to have a map to interior works I may have missed otherwise.

You can also download the brochure before you go:

Coronado Museum of History and Art

by lmkluque Updated Oct 22, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Traveling often includes some time spent on learning what makes a specific destination unique.

In Coronado this can be done at the Museum of History and Art. The city's buildings aren't as old as those found in Europe, but the facts telling the story of Coronado's creation and rise, from the early seventeenth century to the present, are alive with bits of cultural history, like the tent city that attracted people here during the summer.

The story of Coronado tells about young entrepreneurs, like Babcock, Story and later on, Spreckels, who came here with a vision and helped create this lovely resort town. War time stories, such as, this is the original home of US Naval Aviation. Royal love stories, such as, this the well known/hotly debated first meeting place of The Prince of Wales and Mrs. Wallis Spencer, Jr. Even movie star stories are told through old photographs and other displays.

    Glorietta Bay Marina

There several areas that you can enjoy the marina, but I think the one nearest to Hotel Del Coronado is lovely. Just being next to the water and seeing all the beautiful sailboats and yachets was tranquil, especially during the sunset hours. This one is part of the Coronado Yacht Club founded in 1913.

    Gelato fresh

Wandering Coronado, especially in the spring and summer, one can get warm. What better way to refresh but get an ice cold Gelato at Bottarga Italianate.
