Well... if you have watched television anytime recently, you will see that Americans are growing larger at an alarming rate. One of the reasons for this rise is that people do not "Push away the plate". I know I am guilty of cleaning all of the plates put in front of me.
Claim Jumper is one restaurant where even the best plate cleaners will not sop up that last bit of gravy. These portions are huge, and the food is very good.
Favorite Dish: Steaks, Pot Pies, meat loaf... all kinds of great food... but the portions are HUGE!
During a recent trip to South Coast Plaza, I met my parents at Z Tejas, which is an Arizona based Southwestern fusion restaurant chain.
Z Tejas mixes many different flavors and textures and really has such a diverse menu that just about everyone should find something they like.
Pacific Whey Cafe is an excellent choice for everyone with an appetite. It is a classy joint with sophistication menu-wise and from its dark-wood parlor interior. It is foodie without the fuss and $$$ on the menu. The salads are super deluxe. Consider to share. Same deal with the juicy gourmet burgers, which you can have your "whey" or pick from the selection on the menu. Burgers and sandwiches come with standard hand-cut fries or homemade chips. The cafe, at South Coast Plaza, has ample seating, so it's very friendly to big parties and there is space to stretch out a bit after eating a whole meal.

Come in in the late afternoon for 1/2 off desserts. Soem good pickings from which to choose and savor! (also, subject to change, but doubt it)

Wait times for service is minimal to none most of the time. The seating is that ample.
Favorite Dish: Panini....everyone on the menu!
This is a great litle bakery/cafe for a number of reasons. Wide selection of baked goods. Great egg srambles and other breakfast dishes. Prices are reasonable. It is the only free hot spot we found in the area, a big plus if you need to do the email thing. Free hot spots are very difficult to find in parts of Orange County. Coffee is good while cappucinos are acceptable.
Staff is very friendly and helpful. Two seperate indoor dining rooms and also some outdoor seating available.
Favorite Dish: The Berry Almond Swiss Oatmeal or possibly the Farmer's Scrambler. Great breads and muffins also.
We had read many good things about this tiny cafe, including a Orange County Register '10 Memorable Meals' award in 2005 and AOL City Guide pick as the # 1 Vegetarian restaurant in Orange County, 2007. Their website advertises 'Mostly Organic and handmade food'. This deli/cafe is really tiny, with only about four tables inside and two or three ouside for dining. Located in a strip mall next to a pizza hut, it really has little atmosphere going for it, however, the owners are friendly and the food is quite varied and imaginative.
Being in OC for just two days, and seeing this as our one chance to dine here, we really piled it on, wanting to sample as varied a menu as possible. Between the two of us we ordered the Avanti gourmet cheese, olive, bread & magic sampler, a Rubenesque sandwich, a salad which contained mozzarello cheese & tomatoes, a desert sampler plate of 3 different deserts and some bottled fermented chinese iced tea of which I can not recall the name. Everything was delicous, everything. We both agreed this was one of the very best vegetarian meals we have eaten anywhere, period.
Favorite Dish: WOW! That's a tough one. Probably the Rubenesque sandwich. However, if we ever get the opportunity to dine hear again, even though everthing we tasted was so good, we would probably order something different off the menu just for the experience. This restaurant is a true gastronomic delight.

Put yourself in the server's hands and let the Chefs get creative. You can order a 4-course prix fixe meal. Just tell your server if you have any food allergies and/or things you'd rather not have and the Chefs will send out the courses. Your server can pair them with an appropriate wine and will sometimes have some surprises. Its a great way to dine.

Favorite Dish: On my last visit they served the most incredible chocolate pot-du-creme that was dense, rich and incredibly delicious. The server paired it with a Bonny Doon Frambroise dessert wine that was the perfect combination.
Rich chocolate and raspberries, how can you go wrong? Delicious!
Salads, soups, sandwiches. Good for a light lunch! Healthy food and inexpensively priced. At night, this place stays open later and doubles as a coffee shop. Cool, funky, eclectic interior.
Favorite Dish: Lunch salad/ sandwhich combos are good. Try the hot chai latte.
Mother's is a small chain of markets/deli/restaurants catering to the health food conscious consumer in Orange County. Very large and varied menu of vegetarian foods. Sit down dining or choose from the deli case for take away. Oriental, Mexican, Pasta, various types of veggie burgers, soups, smoothies,etc. Great food at reasonable prices. Easy, quick vegetarian dining.
Favorite Dish: Soup of the day and salad.
This steakhouse is located just across from the South Coast Plaza Mall. The ambiance of the restaurant is very very good. When you come in, you'll walk into a long corridor. And once you're inside the building, you'll hear a jazz band playing, a very elegant bar in the middle of the restaurant, and people smiling. The chairs there are big & comfy. The staff are very friendly and attentive. It has a very nice atmosphere.
Their filet mignon is one of the best so far that I've ever tasted. And they also serve one of the best looking bread baskets. The portions of the steak and side dishes are very big too.
Favorite Dish: Filet Mignon & Warm Butter Cake
Though it is likely not quite up to the strict standards of the French, Vie de France is satisfying enough indeed , especially for Californians. Vie de France is a regular place that I go to when I have been in Costa Mesa throughout the several years in the area.
Inside of South Coast Plaza is the Costa Mesa bakery/cafe and this one just may be the busiest one in the chain. Every time that I stop by here, the restauarant seating is full or near capacity. It is nice quite as nice to dine in. The tables are so close together in a fairly tight space and there is no outdoor dining here to enjoy a cool breeze. In my opinion, it would be better to try a baked item, like a croissant or brioche, and have it to go than to dine here.
Favorite Dish: spinach croissant - a favorite of mine and my mother that is available in the bakery area (for pick-up only)
Any salad on the menu would be great, try niçiose, a typical French one.
WOW! Can you say expensive? Try a side of French Fries for $5.35! Or a soda for $2.50!
Sandwiches are huge and come with potato salad and baked beans and a large price. Can you say $12.50 for half a Pastrami sandwich?
Everything about this place is huge. Menu is huge, dining area is huge, portions are huge. Bring a huge purse or wallet and enjoy!
This is one of a chain of 10 or so in southern California.
Located at the Metrpointe Shopping center, just steps from South Coast Plaza, is Boardwalk Fresh Burgers and Fires, one of a growing number of "build your own burger" joints sweeping the nation. However, the main reason to come here is for the fresh cut fries, cooked to perfection nearly every time, always in peanut oil, the best to happen to fries besides olive oil! Oh that golden crisp, and the flavor that come with!!
Burger wise, Boardwalk is not bad- just no comparison at all to the ever popular In-and-Out and 5 Guys chains- ones with which Boardwalk cannot compete. I have been won over by the addition of the turkey burger to the menu. Beyond burgers, the chicken wraps are very good and filling. For vegetarians, there is a veggie patty offered as well, however, if you are very concerned about the veggie patty being cooked on the same grill as the regular hamburgers, don't bother ordering!
If you want to have junk food without quite as much junk, there are some options to to do here. For example, you can (1)have your burger with a lot veggies fixings (a great variety- from grilled mushrooms and onions, (2) choose either a burger OR fries, (3) just get a salad without the good fattening stuff (less/no dressing, cheese an bacon)
Wait service times can be a bit long from time to time but it's worth the wait to indulge a guilty but not quite sinful pleasure.
Boardwalk has locations mainly on the east coast. The Costa Mesa location is the only one on the west coast, as of this time of this review.*2011

Skosh Monahan is a classy, cool hangout that combines as an Irish watering hole, full sports bar with several flat TVs, entertainment venue and a deluxe American steakhouse. The establishment's welcoming ambience matches its slogan: Where travelers and home folk join to celebrate the day".
Trouble is that for the out-of-towner, Skosh is a bit hard somewhat hidden, just off the beaten Costa mesa path.
Quite spectacular here is the artful presentation of menu items from quality cuts of steak and seafood dishes to pizza, burgers, sandwiches and fries. Amazingly, there is a gluten free menu which features quite tasty, healthier food fare, like pepper seared ahi steak (non soy) and nachos. Yes!
Beware of drinking too much here. The bathrooms here are tiny, tight and may likely be not the cleanest through the evening.
If you drop by here, you may just run into former mayor of Costa Mesa, Gary Monahan.
Hours vary. Don't go by the schedule on the website. Doors can open as soon as 11 AM and close when the owners want it seems.
Così, "meaning "like this/that" in Italian (say with accent on the "i"), is a sure-pleaser for those who want great flavor and relatively healthy options. Although a bit pricey, quality remains high on offering signature flatbread pizza, sandwiches and salads, along with breads and pastries.
I find Così very inviting, with the warmth from the wood fireplace, friendly staff and the decor, Tuscan orange-yellow walls and wood tables. The dining room here is ample and has a very at-home feel. You can take your laptop here as it has free wi-fi. Many of the business crowded nearby do this.
The menu is quite varied and is updated with exciting , exotic options. Of course, the Italian influence is obvious with thin crust pizza, including margherita style, but Così prides itself in offering flavors of the world. In Jan 2011, for example, the eaterie introduced a Thai inspired Satay Chicken flatbread pizza and an Indian curry sandwich.
Wait time for your order is fairly decent. Usually, a pizza will be ready after 6 min or so, sandwich/sandwich melts and salads a few min fewer.
As for 2011...Come on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for 2 for 1 flatbread pizza. There is a Thursday night dine-in only 2 for 1. Hopefully this deal will be a continuous one.
Favorite Dish: Barbeque Flatbread Pizza- just addicting!
Tomato Basil Soup- though they added croutons (really not needed), very tasty.
Wild Alaskan Salmon salad- most expensive at about $8 but well tossed.
Bread Pudding- so, so delectable. Make sure you have this warmed up.
