    Furnace creek

The name of Furnace creek refers to the temperature of the atmosphere in this place at the peak of Summer. We visited in early April and it was pleasantly warm. When we drove close to the Death Valley in July, we stayed at Dantes view and did not came to the bottom of the Furnace !

This center was bustling with loads of visitors. Here is where you'll find some park rangers to help you with information about the park. They do charge a small fee for the maps, but it is well worth it. They have a little movie presentation that explains many wonders of the park. A gift shop is on site too. Furnace creek you'll find many amenities too!

This center includes a wonderful museum that has a wonderful representation of what type of wild life from the past to future. It has so much wonderful information that my 12 year old actually read and enjoyed the material. I had to share a picture of the display case that illustrated past rangers. Pretty cool place. No fees, but do ask for donations.

Furnace Creek is an oasis of civilization well situated within the park. It enjoys close proximity to sights like Badwater Basin, Devil's Golf Course, Golden Canyon, and Artist's Drive. Furnace Creek offers lodging, restaurants, a gift shop, a general store, an expensive gas station, golf, a museum, and equestrian facilities.

Death Valley Museum and Visitor Center

This visitor center is the main information center in the park. It has friendly personnel to help you with your questions and plans, as well as a very nice display. The short 12 minute slide program, which is shown about every 30 minutes, is a nice introduction to the park. The exhibits deal with the geology, wildlife, climate, and both the human and natural history of the park. From November through April there are a variety of ranger lead walks and talks scheduled at the center. Open all year from 8:00 to 5:00, this center also has an area to purchase informative and interesting books as well as postcards and souvenirs. The year we were here, Death Valley had an above average rainfall. In the photo notice all the beautiful wild flowers in front of the Visitor Center.

So this is a place you can go to pay (a lot) for a drink or some trinkets. A lot of strange things are going on at this location. There is a resturant, bar, store, post office, and also a golf course.

YES a golf course. If you are a little wack you may want to try and give it a play. Check out this website to find out some info about the course.

Furnace Creek is the Park headquarters. It's an excellent place to stop and gather any information you need, from trail maps to tips on hiking to driving directions. It also has the best restaurant and lodging in Death Valley. This is the ideal place to stay inside the park. It also gets booked way in advance.

For many years, borax was mined in Death Valley. The park museum at Furnace Creek explains more about it. The wagon shown here is an example of the type used to haul the stuff out of the valley.

In the middle of the desert, a green oasis with palm trees and a golf course. It all looks a bit surreal in this place.
