Americana Bar And Grill: A Local Favorite!

by lmkluque Updated Aug 15, 2012

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This popular, casual restaurant is centrally located just a block from Sea Grove Park and across the street from the Del Mar Plaza.

One of the first impressions is it's popularity, as there are always people sitting outside at the tables lined along this busy corner of the main intersection. The aromas wafting out onto the sidewalk is the second attention getter. If you're not hungry when you walk past the sidewalk diners, you'll be ready to eat before arriving at the next door.

The name of this restaurant has changed several times over the years, but Americana seems to be the solution. Originally a breakfast spot, the constant clientele has encouraged the owners to stay open for lunch and dinner. Brunch on Sundays and even a Happy Hour is in full swing. Special nights, they offer half-prices on certain items, and even a guest bartender which seems to add to the fun.

Favorite Dish: Prices are higher than a Denny's or Carrows, but the ambiance and flavor are worth the extra. I suggest at breakfast, making a customized omlette choosing your favorite ingredients. At lunch try the Country Ham and Swiss sandwich with salad and if you happen to be there for a casual dinner try the steamed mussels in wine sauce.

    Bully's North: Late Night Dining

by lmkluque Updated Aug 15, 2012

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Price per person listed below is a bit deciving because it would be the cost of a full dinner and either at lunch or during Happy Hour the cost could be considerably less.

This darkish pub-like restaurant with cushy booths all round, offers prime rib, steaks and high-end seafood. Take a clue from the horses racing along the edge of the awing; it appeals to a more sports minded crowd, and it is quite popular. The atmosphere alone, is worth choosing Bully's for at least one of your meals in Del Mar.

Favorite Dish: Bully's opens at 10:00 a.m. and offers breakfast fare; eggs any style with a wonderful choice of meats as well as a variety of omelettes.

At lunch time, order the Crab-stuffed Mushrooms appetizer, Bully's Prime Rib petite cut which comes with their own Onion Soup, & French Fries. Double Chocolate Mousse for dessert and if you drink anything more than tap water the cost before tax and tip will be over $30.00.

However, if your budget screams at such an expense for lunch, wait a bit, until 3:00 p.m. when Happy Hour begins and order, Spicy Chicken Wings, Popcorn Shrimp, Potato Skins and a nice Bloody Mary, which willl be just over $13.00 before tax and tip and filling enough that dinner won't be necessary at all.

Pacifica Breeze Cafe/Pacifica Del Mar: A Coffee Stop With A View...Or Dinner!

by lmkluque Updated Aug 15, 2012

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

A restaurant with a split-personality, Pacifica Del Mar / Pacifica Breeze Cafe!

If you are an early riser and need a jolt of coffee to get you going, this is a great solution. Casual, relaxed and low-key, this patio overlooks the main section of Del Mar Village, the L'Auberge Spa and Resort as well as beyond that, the Pacific Ocean.

Arriving later in the morning this is a convenient stop for lunch while shopping at Del Mar Plaza.

They are open at 7:00 a.m. for breakfast until after lunch at 3:00 p.m.

Pacifica Cafe is open for dinner, offers an eclectic mix of Pacific Rim flavors and a pretty good Happy Hour experience!

Favorite Dish: Stop here for coffee, read your morning Daily Racing Form and enjoy the view!

Later try out their offerings for Happy Hour 4:00 - 6:30 daily and 4:00 until closing Monday and Tuesday!

Oh, they do have free Wifi.

The Fish Market: On The Border Of Solana Beach & Del Mar

by lmkluque Updated Aug 15, 2012

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This is the third location for The Fish Market, a unique restaurant created by a sport fisherman, a boat captain and a gourmet cook. Which might explain the definite impression The Fish Market makes from the first moment one enters.

I guess, technically the restaurant is located in Solana Beach, but it must be just on the border, as it is across the street from the Del Mar Race Track--which is in Del Mar.

Not only a casual restaurant with a comfortable oyster bar, counter service and cozy cocktail bar lounge, it also has a full service retail fish market smack in the middle of the place.

I like their downtown San Diego location better because it faces the activity on the bay, but this might be a great place for you to stop after a day at the races.

Favorite Dish: Belly-Up to the Oyster Bar for a fun experience, is my suggestion.

Otherwise, seafood dishes of various types are the main offering here and they do serve chicken and meat as well. They will even create a vegetarian dish for you if asked.

Kitchen 1540!: At L’Auberge Del Mar Resort and Spa

by lmkluque Updated Aug 15, 2012

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Kitchen 1540 at L'Auberge Del Mar is now a couple of years old and quite a nice addition.

Words that come to mind are sophisticated, elegant, and romantic, yet this lovely restaurant offers, good food and a relaxing atmosphere with a roaring fire place and lofty ceilings. French doors open out to the herb sented garden complete with waterfall, patio dining and private Cabanas for a more intimate dining experience .

The patio is sunken a few feet below the expanse of lawn which stretches out to the street, so there is a sense of privacy even though it is located at the busy intersection of 15th Street and Camino Del Mar.

Kitchen 1540 is open seven days a week and serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and a lovely brunch on Sunday. If a week at L'Aburege is not in your budget, at least allow yourself the luxury of a meal at it's excellent restaurant.
    .

Favorite Dish: Gourmet dining is always a treat. The prices are surprisingly reasonable for such an elegant setting and the chef seems to make the most of each season. Another thing I'd mention is that the idea of "locally grown" is embraced at this restaurant and the dishes are presented in innovative ways.

It would be unfair to say what my favorite dish is because it might not appear on the seasonal menu by the time of your visit.

However, if you'd like a wonderful experience, remember to ask for a wine suggestion to compliment the meal. They are good at this.

The Brigantine: The Del Mar Location

by lmkluque Updated Aug 15, 2012

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This popular chain offers seafood with the flavors of Mexico, Asia, Italy and the USA. It successfully attracts the formal diner as it does the casual diner and that is an accomplishment. Though it is a chain, the atmosphere is rich and comfortable and they take pride in serving better than average meals.

The Brigantine is located between the Racetrack and the downtown "village" area of Del Mar, which makes it a convenient stop from one place to the other.

They have an Oyster Bar, patio dining and give accommodating service.

Favorite Dish: I suggest their Happy Hour menu or their Sundowner Special, which is a bargin.

Il Forniao Restaurant & Bakery: If Only For The Bread!

by lmkluque Updated Aug 15, 2012

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The interior of this Italian restaurant is not really my type of place, however I strongly suggest checking it out. The food is well made with the freshest ingredients and the flavors are delicious and to be honest, the excellent meal has allowed the atmosphere to grow on me.

They offer patio dining and I always eat out there. Near the restaurant is, Enoteca del Fornaio, their wine bar, convenient for anyone wanting to sit on the sun drenched terrace overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It's a great meeting place and glorious at sunset .

Favorite Dish: Everything I've ever ordered at Il Fornaio has been delicious and filling. In fact, two people can order a salad and a calzone, share it and feel satisfied.

Having said all that, the real recommendation I offer Il Fornaio, is for their bakery!! Whatever you do, at least buy one loaf of their bread. In fact, if a picnic at Seagrove Park or on the beach is your plan, stop at Il Fornaio for the bread, you will be very happy you did. The price of a loaf is about the same as other brands at the grocery store, but the quality and flavor of Il Fornaio's surpasses on all counts.

    Poseidon: Casual....On The Beach

by lmkluque Updated Aug 15, 2012

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

What makes Posiedon so popular is it's location and casual atmosphere. The prices are about as high as other near by places but, at Poseidon it feels more natural to "kick back" and relax.

Most important, the patio dining area is open to the ocean breeze. It is surrounded by a waist high wall to keep sand and the beach population from disturbing diners but it isn't a deterrent to the seaguls. Umbrellas and heaters are provided to keep the sun off during the day and to keep the chill off anytime. If you can eat at only one restaurant in Del Mar this is the one to choose.

Favorite Dish: Breakfast is served at weekends beginning at 9:00 a.m. However, I suggest having a late lunch, giving the sun time to burn off the marine layer and show it's brightest rays. The sights, sounds and feel of the beach with it's Pacific Ocean will make it a lasting memory of your visit.

Clam Chowder and Fish & Chips on a cool day or Ceviche and Fish Tacos when it's hot outside.

Dinners at sunset are spectacular, but after dark you'll lose sight of things.

Americana Restaurant: A melting pot of ethnic cuisines

by BLewJay Updated Apr 4, 2011

We met our friends from Phoenix at the Americana Restaurant and it reminds you of an ecclectic place to sit down, relax and enjoy the view.

Favorite Dish: I had Roja's Breakfast Burrito (scrambled eggs, andouille sausage, jack and cheddar cheeses, and onion wrapped in a flour tortilla and served with home fries and fresh salsa) while LJ had Oscar's Choice (two buttermilk pancakes, two scrambled eggs & ham).

    Prime 10: Great Steak

by rstary Updated Apr 4, 2011

I had surf and turf. This truly was one of the best tenderloins I have ever had!

Favorite Dish: Make sure you save room for the Chocolate Lava cake. You must try this wonderful dessert. It takes a little time for them to prepare it, but it is worth the wait!

Rendevous China Bistro: What an awesome find

by BLewJay Written Jan 20, 2007

Favorite Dish: We started off with the Sampler Plate for 2 (chicken brochette, panko shrimp, veggie spring roll, cheese rangoon & boiled dumpling with hot sauce). For dinner, LJ had Walnut Shrimp (shrimp in creamy garlic sauce & topped with carmalized walnuts, white rice on the side) while I had Sesame Jumbo Scallops (scallops tossed with carmalized soy glaze & coated with sesame seeds, white rice on the side)...to include Sautéed Green Beans as a side dish.
