Just 5 miles away from where I live is the Los Angeles Arborteum. There's no better place to spend a warm sun shiny spring day in Californa than in the lush gardens or sit by a waterfall and watch 200 peacocks strut their stuff. Visit the tropical greenhouse or take a tram ride through the 127-acre garden with plant and tree life from around the...more
Santa Anita Racetrack only 5 miles from Duarte. This racetrack is for the whole family. In the infield of the racetrack there are park-like grounds, picnic areas and a playground for children called “Anita Chiquita”, of course you can continue to wager just a few steps away. The architecture of the clubhouse is considered eclectic art deco and is...more
The Huntington Library isn't very far from where I live and my guests always enjoy a trip there. The fine art museum houses the well known "Blue Boy" and "Pinky" by Thomas Gainsborough. In the library is one of the original Gutenberg Bibles on display. The botanical gardens, especially when the roses are in full bloom are especially beautiful and...more
Duarte is called the "City of Health" due to the fact we have The City of Hope a cancer research and hospital. At City of Hope there are more than 300 physicians and scientists and over 2,500 employees work to find the causes of and cures for cancer and other life-threatening diseases, including diabetes and HIV/AIDS. City of Hope, located on over...more
The hike up Fish Canyon was an easy family trek, but due to a huge quarry who blocked off the original route, a new route has been built and some say a much dangerous hike.quote:? The new trail follows far too steep a course for the average hiker. My impression was that the engineers left out a couple dozen switchbacks. In short, what was an easy...more
The Claim Jumper is has a rustic interior and is a very large restaurant that is full every night of the week with patrons waiting in line. It's a chain of restaurant in CA and other states.
Favorite Dish: I guess the porkchops are my favorite; 4 porkchops braced up against and enormous mound of garlic potatoes with a sumptous dressing and crisp vegetable (not cooked too much) and a big piece of cornbread with lots of butter. This meal lasts me for three days!!!
If you look closely at the picture you will see a deer hiding in the brush. A local photographer was lucky to get this photo, usually the deer stay well hidden. However, a few years ago there was a deer in my yard, he was frightened and confused. The local authorities were called and they led the deer back to the safety of Fish Canyon. Some of the...more

Duarte takes an active roll in providing facilities for our youth and two years ago this teen center was built. It's available for after-school hours and on weekends. Its adjacent to a soccer/football field which seems to be in constant use. Sorry to say we just had our first "gang" activity in Duarte. Not due to the pro-active police department...more
Across the street from where I live is a two-mile-long recreational trail which ends at a lovely park with playground equipment, several tennis courts, picnic areas and a field for soccer or football. The trail runs along the old streetcar line. The people of Duarte made good use of it and it's now a favorite meeting place since we don't have a...more
