There's a tiny little 'main street' type shopping district at the top of Fairmount Ave. Not much there, but it's more pleasant than San Pablo Ave (the highway-like main route through El Cerrito). Fatapple's restaurant has good pastries and milkshakes.

You can get some great views over San Francisco Bay and the city of Richmond by driving along Arlington Blvd in the El Cerrito Hills (you can also take the #7 bus). Watch out for deer.

El Cerrito exists in the fuzzy area between strip-mall suburbia and outlying semi-urban city. Theres really not much for the tourist here.
