Escondido Things to Do

  • San Diego Zoo Safari Park

Formerly known as The San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park it is now called San Diego Zoo Safari Park, but Safari Park is acceptable. Located in the hills of Escondido this huge park offers a view of many animals in an environment that they might be found in the wild. To Be Continued....

  • Orfila Vineyard Tour

This is my favorite winery to visit and spend a day at. As an award-winning boutique winery it has been given more than a thousand national and international awards, which means that their wines are good. I've been going to this winery for almost as long as it's been open, since 1994 and of the two wineries in the area this is my favorite. Tours...

  • Wine Tasting

Wine tasting is fun. Especially at Orfila Vineyards. The main idea of "tasting" is to give you a fair sampling of the wines on offer so you can decide which one you want to buy. It is not mandatory that you buy anything and that is why there is a charge for the wine tasting. $10.00 for six tastings plus the Orfila logo glass to take home. The...

The San Diego Wild Animal Park is located in Escondido California, north of San Diego. This park is a major center for breeding endangered animals to help ensure their survival. Take the train ride for a relaxing and informative overview of the animals and the parks function. Don't be surprised if you see some mating (we saw lions). It's what the...

From April until September, every Friday night from about 5-9 people line the streets of Grand Avenue with vintage cars ranging from Model Ts up to cars from the early 70s. You´'ll see a lot of families couples, young people, and teens. While you´re there you can stop by one of the many restaurants or, have an ice cream or coffee at one of the many...

  • Wild Animal Park

Technically the wild animal park is in San Diego but location wise it's definitly on the outskirts of Escondido! I love the wild animal park because unlike a zoo the animals are in an area that was made to look like their natural habitat. They have much more room and for those who are animal lovers it's much easier to enjoy seeing exotic animals in...

  • For the Art lover

California Center for the Arts Museam. Here they have an art museum host different exhibits every couple of months, and they offer classes and there is a large theater featuring misical artists as well as theater productions. The museum has had some really great exhibits, one of my favorites was Mapplethorpe.

For those of you who cant get to Australia for some reason, here is So Cals little gift to you. They have an exhibit at the San Diego Wild Animal Park where you can feed the birds and if they are hungry, will land all over you and drink right from your hand. It is really fun, even if you have the ability to sometime see these beautiful birds in...

  • Orfila Vineyards - Excellent Wine

You'll see signs to the winery when you go to the Wild Animal Park. We stopped by on a whim to see what they had and were rewarded for it.The winery itself is fairly small and we didn't take a tour. Once you've seen a few wineries you pretty much get the idea. The tasting was very surprising. By far, our favorite was the Lotus. They also make a good...

  • Elephant Show at the Wild Animal Park

Another entertaining show. It is quite short about 15 minutes but worth it. These animals are amazing! You will be amazed by the way the keepers work with a 10,000-pound (4,500-kilogram) pachyderm, as elephants demonstrate behaviors that feature their strength, intelligence, and versatility. Showtimes: 1 and 3 p.m. daily.

  • Suzy Q's Diner

We had heard great things about this new 50s diner that recently opened in Escondido and decided to check it out. When you walk inside you feel like you are transported back to the era - a juke box plays classic oldies, the decor is perfect with Coca-Cola signs all over, even the red booths and bar stools look just out of the decade. It has an...

Though technically not a restaurant, Orfila Winery is a wonderful place to choose to have a meal. They do have a few picnic items for sale and on Fridays that have about five Gourmet Food Trucks on the grounds where you can buy loads of tasty things. Except on the weekends, they do allow you to bring in your own food, but of course, no alcohol...

Received an invite from our friends to join them for dinner at The Original San Crab Tavern. The location is off the map (so to speak) but once you find it, it’s really a very cool place to hang out, drink beer and eat seafood. They have a pretty extensive menu, but since there were four of us and we all like seafood, decided to do the San Crab...

Filipi´s is a casual Italian eatery located in oldtown Escondido. They have everything from pizza, pasta, salads, etc. No reservations necessary but you could wait up to 25 minutes on busy nights especially Friday. Pizza is also available for takeout. I like the pizza here because it has generous amounts of cheese!!

The Orfila Winery is not exactly a restaurant. It was the only place I ate at in Escondido and I liked it. All sorts of wine assessor can be found here. Cook Books, books on wine, wine bottle stoppers or wine bottle stoppers are here. Coasters to put under the wine glass what ever you can think of it is most likely to be found here. They've added wine related shirts, purses or bags. Most importantly they sell Orfila wines here. This winery has received thousands of national and international awards for their wines and you will see why when you taste them.

What to buy: As always I suggest you buy what you like and what you can afford.

The one thing I do recommend is that you join the tasting experience, even if you don't intend to buy a bottle. It's fun and they people on both sides of the counter are usually very nice and friendly and almost always in a great mood. Could it be the wine? It could be, but they are friendly and nice before even getting the wine.

This sign at the Battlefield Park has good advice on it. Here is some better advice. Take sunscreen with you if you are going to hike over the hill to see the monument. I got a sunburned nose. Here is some even better advice. You can see the monument from a parking area along side the road without having to take that long hot hike if you don't want to. The hike was worth it for me. I saw some cactus wrens and california quail there. From the top of the hill I also got a good view of the Wild Animal Park.

Escondido Off The Beaten Path

  • At the Wild Animal Park there...

At the Wild Animal Park there is a garden with native plants of the area. It is high on the hill above the area where the animal exhibits are. This part of the Wild Animal Park was not very busy. In addition to desert plants I saw some small animals and birds here. There are a few pictures of them in my travelogue.

Lake Wohlford is a nice place for families such as for fishermen.

And for cyclists, it's close to Cole Grade Rd which leads you all the way (follwoing Cole Grade and Nate Harrison Grde) up to Palomar Mountain

    Equipment: depending on your activity

cyclists: adapters to pump your inner tubes at public gas stations, or hand-pump your extra tube you're hopefully taking with you

still better take your bikes up there.. entering Escondido (on country club rd) Lake Wohlford Inhabitant Lake Wohlford

Favorite thing: The weather in Escondido during Novemeber and December is reported on average as:
    November 74° High 47° Low
    December 70° High 42° Low

I'd say the weather is usually a bit cooler during the day, most of the time, maybe in the mid to low 60's, sometimes (rarely) rainy, but in general a bit cooler than the suggested average.

Besides that which has been mentioned, Lawrence Welk has a pool with water slide, but this might not be a big draw at that time of year, unless you experience one of the hotter days.

Lawrence Welk Resort is located amidst the trees and hills of Escondido This resort is in a more "countryfied" section of San Deigo and not at the hub of the area.

However, when not visiting relatives, I'm sure you will find plenty of interesting things to see and do in and around the area.

In Escondido, there are lakes where fishing is popular, a few shopping areas such as North County Fair, wineries, Orfilia and Rancho Bernardo. Oh, and for the daughter, a pretty interesting sculpture park, "Queen Califia's Magical Circle" is situated in Kit Carson Park.

Escondido is especially known for it's artistic bent and besides, antique shops, galleries and restaurants, there are several live theater venues, including the very popular, California Center for the Arts, Escondido

MODE, The Museums of Downtown Escondido, include the Children's Museum which might interest your daughter as well as the Mingei International Museum. My granddaughter liked it quite a lot, especially since I gave her a "throw-a-way" camera to take photos with.
