In August, the county fair is in Ferndale - and it's a real hayseed. Not too big, but like the kind of fair you'd have expected in Mayberry.
Rides for the kids, trick dog shows, magic acts, lots of greasy, sugary food and treats. However, the art exhibits were really pretty interesting. The local art talent is quite impressive, from photography to watercolors to sculptures. The prize winning gallery is worth looking at for sure.
If you have little ones along, go to the livestock pens and especially the small livestock area - cute floppy bunnies and all kinds of cool critters.
The quilts and jams and all that are a classic fair event. They didn't need any pie-tasting judges, so we didn't stay all day...Waaahhh.
They have a race track there, too!

Great food at reasonable prices. Friendly staff. Indoor and outdoor dining. Limited seating. A great little place for lunch when in Ferndale. This place is easily missed due to it's small size.
Favorite Dish: Breakfasts, sandwiches, wraps, burgers, soup, smoothies, espreso, teas and more.

Hey this town is famous for amazing Victorian architecture - so park the car and go for a walk down the sidestreets, too.

Favorite thing: The main street of Ferndale is very picturesque! It looks as if it stepped out the 1950s...right down to the quaint little shops with old time facades!
Fondest memory: One of the best times to visit this town is during the Christmas season! Great shopping, dinner at the Victorian Inn, handmade candies, and all the Victorian homes trimmed with lights! I will have to add photos then...for now here is a shot of Main Street!

Favorite thing: If you do visit the fair...a trip on the Ferris Wheel is a must! Otherwise you can't get this great of a view of the grounds!

Favorite thing: The Humboldt County Fair is positively not the biggest fair you will ever attend! And try as I may it is hard to find a shining light here...except at the entrance!
Fondest memory: I found out the secret of prize winning dairy cows! It is all in the 'four udder placement.' Remember this tip at your next county fair !
