The Greyhound Bus station is downtown near the baseball park and Fulton Mall. This area of downtown doesn't appear to be frequented at all, and so it's very dangerous either by day or night. I did see bicycle mounted police officers pushing homeless drunks away from the station and the downtown area, however. During the 30 minute layover in Fresno, I was able to walk a significant part of Fulton Mall taking the photos for the downtown tips in these pages. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

 Amtrak San Joaquin Train by cheap_tourist
Since my trip started in Los Angeles, I had to take the Amtrak bus at L.A. Union Station to Bakersfield. In Bakersfield, I took the San Joaquin train to Fresno.
The train station in Fresno is in the downtown area. It's within walking distance to many attractions like the Meux Home, the Water Tower, the Legion of Valor Museum, the Fulton Mall, and the Fresno Metropolitan Museum. Leave a Comment

Chukchansi Park is home the the Pacific Coast Fresno Grizzlies baseball and Fresno Fuego minor league soccer teams. The stadium was originally city owned but is now sponsored by the Indian casino corporation of the same name that operates a gambling casino in the foothills between Fresno and Yosemite National Park. The Stadium also has a children's playground and old fashioned carousel. The Stadium is also very close to the Greyhound Bus Terminal. Leave a Comment

Fulton Mall is the original downtown street. Once called J street, in 1877 it was a dirt road lined by woodframed buildings--a flour mill and boarding house owned by Calvin Jones. Dedicated in 1964, Fulton Mall is a paved center of pedestrian activity, shaded by trees and numerous historic high rise buildings dating between 1910 and the 1930's. I found the pavement in need of updating from the fractured concrete slab materials, but otherwise the shade of the trees provided pleasant relief from hot central valley sun. There are a number of sidewalk cafes in approximately six block long Fulton Mall. There are also music venues and fountains. Leave a Comment

Also on the Fulton Mall is the dramatic Pacific Southwest Building (1923) designed by Fresno architect R.F. Felchlin in the popular rennaisance revival style. Leave a Comment

There were at least several more big buildings that I couldn't take time to adequately photography, if those presented earlier are captured fairly. These buildings range mostly between the teens and twenties of the 20th century. I had a difficult time identifying them during late image sorting and background reading, but I believe these images are of the Helm building (1914), which is another rennaissance revival building facade designed by architect George Kelham. Get cheap flights to Fresno. Airports in the area include Fresno Terminal (FAT). When you fly to Fresno you can take in Fulton Mall, Chukchansi Park, Fresno Metropolitan Museum, Old Fresno Water Tower and Tower Theater. Check flights to Fresno when you want to visit these nearby places: Malaga, Clovis and Barstow.
