    Cliff House and Seal Rocks

Cliff House (the original) was built in 1863. The building in this photo is the 1909 building which was the third one.

Cliff House has been renouvated. The structure next door, which until recently housed a snack shop and the National Park Service visitors center (which wasn't there when we visited as it didn't buy the property until 1977), will be demolished. In its place, a new building will include a two-story dining room with vast views of the ocean, an observation deck and a grand entrance lobby.

Included in the $14 million renovation program are repairs to the "camera obscura" located just below the Cliff House.

Golden Gate National Recreation Area Transportation

  • by MikeM2 Updated Aug 2, 2013

The collection of Cash tolls on the Golden Gate Bridge have been abolished -

How to pay... as of August 2013

Option 1 - log onto Bridge web site and set up payment linked to your credit card - enter dates you plan to travel and your car registration - your card will be billed each time you cross towards San Francisco.

Option 2 - when you cross the bridge from San Francisco pull into the view area just after you cross - take your registration number and CASH into the office there and pay for your return journey - simple and you can get some great photos of the bridge from here

Favorite thing: The Golden Gate National Recreation Area includes over 30 sites preseving two hundred years of history, from the Native American culture, the Spanish Empire frontier and the Mexican Republic, to maritime history, the California Gold Rush, the evolution of American coastal fortifications, and the growth of urban San Francisco. The park includes sites in Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo Counties and range from historical sites, to recreational sites, to areas of great natural beauty.

Fondest memory: Walking around Point Lobos and watching the sunset.
