When we awoke the following morning, we took a stroll along the main drag. The buildings looked like they had been there for hundreds of years, and some might have been, because this place has a long history and is on an old access route.

The buildings are mostly of wood, but well maintained when you think about the climate up here. There are shops and bars and places to eat, lots of small hotels and building painted in loud colours, but pretty with it.

I would have liked to been able to stay a little longer, but with the weather getting worse, we had to make our way through Yosemite National Park.

Now that we have made our nest for the night at the lovely and cozy Charlotte Hotel, we thought we would nip over too the Saloon on the other side of the road, called the Iron Door Saloon.

It was a real saloon, with people trying to stick money to the ceiling. The bar staff where friendly and the music was great.

It dates back as a saloon to 1896 and the reason it was named The Iron Door Saloon, was because of the huge iron doors made in England and brought in by mule, well some of the trip anyway :), and these doors are still on today.

Great Saloon and really enjoyed ourselves, and you can have a nice meal at The Iron Door Grill.

Inspired by this once a Gold Rush town I composed this song

    GROVELAND WELCOMES YOU
Music and Lyrics - Carmen Taira

Somewhere in an old historic town
Once wealth of goldmine was found
Tall green trees under the clear blue sky
    Lies our town of Groveland

    Yonder are mountains standing high
Beneath is the river flowing by
Breathe the air, fresh all around
    In our town of Groveland

    Chorus:
Above the fog, below the snow
That’s where you want to go
In the heart of the Sierra (2x)
    Groveland welcomes you

Off the Beaten Path – Rainbow Falls/Pools
Gateway Hwy 120 is one of the road heading to Yosemite National Park. About 25 minutes from the town of Groveland after you pass the View Point of The Rim of the World is a right turn at the beginning of the big bridge. This turn always escapes the tourists or millions of passerby as the best view in the area is on the left side of the bridge. Down the bottom is a perfect natural falls and pools where one can dip their feet or dive from the rock. Best time for swimming is from July thru September. No access fee.
