Head down to the pier early, especially if you are driving. Parking spots are limited. It's best to stay in a near by hotel or rent a house close by. Enjoy the beach, the bars and the restaurants all in walking distance. There is great fishing off the pier and the volleyball is outstanding. In late July, I saw dolphins! Probably five of them, jumping through the waves. I tried to take a photo but they were too far out to be seen with my camera, just the naked eye.
There are also many hermit crabs. I saw small children "hunting" them; they showed me how to do it. Stick your hand into the sand as the froth of a wave comes in. As the wave goes out, scoop your hand and all the sand. There will most likely be little hermit crabs inside! they tickle your hands. Leave a Comment

Though it's not in Hermosa Beach...you can see it on a clear day. Take the Catalina Express to Catalina Island. Leave a Comment Directions: Go South to San Pedro to Catch the closest ferry...there's also a great pier there too! Allow an hour to get there. (It's only 20 minutes away...but you're on the LA freeways the dreaded 405!
