Theaters / Concerts, Hollywood
There are tons of awesome rock clubs located on the sunset strip. I've placed a few of the premier ones on their own tip pages (Whisky a Go go and the House of Blues), but there are tons of others that rock out just as much. The Viper Room, the Key Club, The Roxy, The Rainbow Bar & Grill etc- all have great venues and are worth checking out!!!
Dress Code: Rock-trendy. Mohawks and sneakers and chains- oh my!
The Sunset Strip is famous for its Hard Rock Scene. There are many, many rock clubs that seem to have a headliner every day of the week. In America, this small section of Sunset Boulevard is where Rock began- and one place in particular is the grandfather club of them all- the famous Whisky-a-Go Go. Where the Doors began and all the greats- from Metallica to Clapton to the Stones- have played, the Whisky is a musical historic landmark. Check out the website for upcoming shows, and be sure to check my other tips for neighboring rock clubs.
Dress Code: Dress Rock-Trendy... black Iron Maiden shirts with sneakers are fine at the Whisky.
House of Blues on the Sunset Strip has some AMAZING venues compared to the others across the country. I guess its because its in the epicenter of entertainment? There are many concerts available through the box office, but many others are word of mouth, more intimate performances in the Prince room, etc., that'll you'll pay for at the door. And this is in West Hollywood, and is very convenient to the Saddle Ranch and all the Rock Clubs along the Strip.
Dress Code: Rock It anyway you want.
The Roxy is a night club where it is possible to see many rock artists play their tunes. Artists that have played at the Roxy include Metallica, Van Halen, the Doors, Guns and Roses, Rage Against the Machine, and Frank Zappa just to name a few. The Roxy also has a Battle of the Bands at times and if you have seen the old school Hollywood movie of Cheech and Chong Up in Smoke then you will recognize the Roxy is where their show was played. The Roxy is one of many live venues on Sunset strip and it happens to be one of the best. The light show and acoustics are quite good. For a good time in Hollywood, check out the Roxy Theatre.
Dress Code: No dress code. But many dress up in their most creative attire.
The Whisky A-Go-Go has been home to many of Los Angeles' famous artists. It has been home to famous artists such as the Doors, the Germs, Led Zepplin, Elvis Costello, and Neil Diamond just to name a few. The inside of this famous Los Angeles rock scene consists of a bar with a nice sized floor. On the far end is the stage where local bands play. Shows during the week normally aren't that crowded but on the weekends, particularly Fridays and Saturday nights, the Whisky A-Go-Go can get quite packed. The sound and acoustics inside of this live music joint are great and it is a great place for the young to hang out and party! All ages are accepted here but only those over 21 years of age are legally allowed to drink.
Dress Code: The dress code is not too hard to follow. There are some very interestingly dressed people that visit this place so feel free to follow Nirvana's motto of "Come as you are."
The Chinese Theatre
I guess this is where you would come for that important premier of the latest Nicholas Cage movie. I dont think you will get in though without the very important invitation.
Little did I know that the Lord of the Rings premiere was going on Sunday night at the Egyptian Theatre...Liv Tyler is somewhere in that picture getting out of a limo.
At this point, everyone was yelling, 'Liv, we love you!!' I decided to take many pics and see if she was in any of them. She's on the right, the tallest person there underneath the lit-up 'T' shape.
