Live Performance Venues, Hollywood
A real local favorite is the Hollywood Bowl. It would be especially nice for an out of towner to relax from all of the sight seeing. The Bowl is an outside amphitheatre where you can hear jazz, classical and a variety of other stuff, sometimes w/accompnanying fireworks-sometimes for a as little as a buck! The best part is you're encouraged to bring a picnic basket along. Few things are more relaxing than sipping your wine and delving into the brie whilst enjoying the warm summer air , listening to the tunes....
The Hollywood Bowl is open during the summer only and be forewarned: parking is an absolute nightmare! Trust me on this. If at all possible try taking the bus or a taxi. Even if you want to pay the outrageous prices for parking (sometimes up to $20.oo made all the more ridiculous after paying $1.oo or $5.oo for your tix) you'll still have to contend w/the stacked parking adding a rather unpleasant hour long exit to your evening spent in the parking lot.

hehehe....... IF you happen to have a friend that works at the Academy.... (that was my great opportunity) ;o) then, a once in a lifetime appearance at the Oscar's' it's a must!
Check out my travelogue about the The Academy Awards
You must check out the $1 seats at the Hollywood Bowl. They sell out early and you're pretty far from the stage, but the atmosphere is unbelievable! We saw something about the Emmy awards and TV theme songs last summer - it turned into a sing along with famous TV personalities, and we had a blast! They even let you bring your own picnic. Can't beat the price or the view!
Yeah, I know, you're in Hollywood, land of "film", TV and movies; but realize that actors, whether they're "known" or not, regardless of what they do for a "real" job, like to keep their creative juices flowing and they like to use theater companies and Improv troupes to do so. Go out, spend $8 and see a live show. I saw my sister at the Open Fist Theater. It was not what you'd call a traditional performance but it was great. If avante garde isn't your thing, try something else. Just get out there!!
