    Since1926

The vision was to have a Hollywood Theatre District. The "Father of Hollywood," Charles Toberman and Sid Grauman opened, the "Egyptian in 1922, "El Capitan in 1926 and the "Chinese Theatre in 1927. Three years later the RKO Pantages Theatre was opened. This became a row of theatres within a mile of each other. The interior of El Capitan's was "posh East Indian" following the idea of a theme from the other theaters. Originally the performances were on stage live. When the depression hit and things began to decline, films took over. Over the years it has had many owners and many names but now Disney has taken over and most films are Disney's.

Thus, a great place to take the kids to get out of the hot summer sun.

I brought my son here when he was 5 to see the Lion King show. Of course he doesn't remember it, but I do. What a lovely grand historical theatre with very ornate designs. Built May 1926 in East Indian interior and designed by San Francisco architect G. Albert Lansburgh, this beautiful building has been completely restored and updated with all the latest theater technology.

the famous theater besides Kodak Theater

by machomikemd Updated Nov 28, 2013

El Capitan Theater is a favorite photo stop along the busy Hollywood walk of fame area fronting the entrance to the Kodak theater as it just sits across the street. It is one of the Theaters made by the original founders of the Grauman's Chinese Theater, Charles Toberman and Sid Grauman, it was envisioned as a theater for various plays in the roaring 30's and at present is owned by Disney.

Located accross from the Hollywood and Highland Complex is the restored El Capitan Theater. Located across from the Hollywood and Highland Complex is the restored El Capitan Theater. Originally opened in 1926 it was restored in the early 90's by Disney. It now plays feature length Disney movies.

Be sure to get there early as before the movie you can hear the organist play Movie and Disney classics on a Pipe Organ with over 2500 Pipes.

They also provide additional features with the movie depending on the movie. Recently for Nightmare Before Christmas in 3-D they had several original puppets from the movie on display.

If possible opt for the VIP seats, these are reserved seats and also include popcorn and a soda.

Watching the Stars arrive at a movie premier

I'm not one to be impressed with celebrity, but it was such a fun buzz to watch the stars arrive at the premier of the new Pixar flick "Finding Nemo" at the El Capitan Theater.

They closed down Hollywood Blvd in the block in front of the theater, and built this elaborate walkway and set - only to tear it down as soon as everyone was inside the show.
