I couldn't surf if I tried however it looked fantasic and is part of the World Championships itinerary
Equipment: General surfing gear, ie: wetsuit, board, etc
Try the Java Surf Shack opposite the beach on the Pacific Coast Highway for gear rental...at what didn't seem too expensive prices
(for location see "croissants.." in my other tips)

For me running at HB was torture. I am so used to cooler climate that the humidity and hot weather were killing me. My heart rate went up to the sky all the time, even early in the morning. So I cannot imagine myself running this marathon, but as a viewer it might be fun.
Orange County's only Beachfront Marathon, including a half Marathon, 5k and surfkids mile run. A two day expo will include heatlh and fitness vendors, exhibitors, community groups, and event charities. There will be a tailgate party on Sunday which includes a beer garden and live entertainment.

You can run, jog or stroll down the actual beach itself, of course. If you want to keep the sand out of your sneakers, walking or running along the 8.5-mile paved beachfront trail is another option. What better way to get your heart rate up and burn off some calories all while enjoying a fantastic view of the Pacific Ocean?
This paved trail is very nice, but when needing some cahllenge hit the beach. Running in the sand is very challenging and definitely good work-out..
Equipment: Sandals are not an option if you wanna run in the sand. Unless you don't like the feeling of thousand pounds of small stones in your shoes.

HB is home to more than a half dozen surfing championships each year including the biggest surfing event in the world, the U.S. Open of Surfing.
So this place basically 'lives' from surfing. Surfers from all around gather here around the year and a regular visitor might get the spark for that board life right here at HB.
There are many courses and rental shops, all you need to do is ask for an instructor and there you go. Catch the next wave babe!
Equipment: Most surfing instructors and camps offer various levels of longboard and shortboard instruction for beginning and experienced surfers alike. Lessons and equipments are available from these local firms:
Huntington Beach Surfing Instruction, 714-962-3515
Huntington Surf & Sport, 714-841-4000
Zack’s, 714-536-0215

This is how I ended up in HB... I'd been to Lac D'Annecy in France (1976) & Moscow in what was the old Soviet Union (1978) as a schoolboy, plus the annual family holiday to either Newquay (Cornwall),...

Yes, I know, again a very cliche statement to make. No doubt many would argue against it too. There are far more beautiful beaches in Cal, but none quite as California as this one. From the pier to......
