Come here especially on weekends and during Oktoberfest for a good ol' time here here. Old World Village is in a kind of hideaway location in Huntington Beach off of Beach Blvd. The village is a nice alternative to the typical America strip mall. It is not even worthy to be called a mall in the modern sense. It's more of a cluster of specialty stores and restaurants in a picturesque Bavarian setting. There is not just German culture represented here but also Russian, Italian, Jewish and more. Here , it may be best to try the meats and baked goods at Euro Market, Bakery and Deli outside of visiting here for beer tasting. . Check out events on the webpage! Leave a Comment

This was a big deal at HB. Preparations started weeks before and people 'reserved' their spots along the way. Too bad that I was in San Diego during 4th July. But it was a blast there too. Independence Day parade west of the Mississippi River features more than 300 entries including bands, floats, film and television celebrities, local dignitaries, equestrians and community groups. The parade heads south to Main Street, proceeds up Main Street through the downtown, ending at Yorktown and Main. Leave a Comment

About 30 minutes from HB on Beach Blvd is Knotts Berry Farm. Started selling berries then fried chicken now its a theme park with roller coasters rides etc. Still the best Fried Chicken dinners anywhere. Leave a Comment

HB boasts having the biggest 4th of July parade west of the Mississippi (river)- and why not when it's right by the beach! This annual event has grown bigger and crowded. This year was particularly hot as the place to be for the holiday, and, well, indeed scorcherous in temperature even by the beach. I love it here to do people-watch. Everyone's happy to spend a free day by the shore -hell, just to have the day off. There is the official parade plus several attractions. Much food's a sizzling at several spots at the Pier Plaza, as well as good shopping and buzz from musical entertainment. See website for many pictures and info. Leave a Comment

Huntington Beach is in Orange County or now The OC .Most people come to see the beaches and go to Disneyland. Disneyland is about a 30 minute drive from HB but if you hav'nt been there it a must do. Disneyland and California Adventures. Get the 3 day pass because it cheaper and it will take 3 days to go through the two parks. Leave a Comment

If you are staying @ HB, you are probably not that much a party animal. HB is not full of nightclubs so for the evening fun, you might like to go to movies. Pierside Pavillion is a good basic movie theater just right 'there', around the corner. Almost next to the pier. Leave a Comment Address: 300 Pacific Coast Highway, Huntington BeachCA, CA,

Is it August & there are huge bleachers & tens of thousands of people? Then you're in my hometown of HB during our biggest surf contest of the year. Elite pro surfers from around the globe are here to prove theemselves. It is really amazing. Many Saturdays & Sundays you will see small tents & flags, & hear an airhorn. Lucky you! A local surf contest, boys & girls ages 10-17. They paddle fiercley. effortlessly stand up. Cut across the face of the wave, jerk their bodies. Vigourous but graceful. No surf contest? There are still 20 -100 guys near the pier every single day of the year. Watch them lay on those boards & wait. Hear them hoot and holler as someone finally sees the next set roll in. See them jockey for a position. I also like the pier very much on stormy winter days. The smell of salftwater & sting & power & sound of the wind is intense. I was standing right at the edge of a barricaded section at the end of our pier yrs ago, when the next day it all fell in the sea-- right where I had been standing, a restaurant & all. It took years, but our city rebuildt. Vendors sell photos & paintings of the day the pier fell. Check out the happy families going for walks. Check out the minor, but distinctive, fishing culture (not for eating). See pelicans & seagulls. Hear the lifeguard from his tower scold someone who trying to ride a bike on the pier. Wake up early, get to the pier by 6:00am, watch the "dawn patrol" surfers as the sun comes up. It's so peaceful. The light is golden. They stand right on PCH, shimmy out of their street clothes and into a wetsuit, bare-naked for a few moments, with only a well placed towel. Then they get in a whole few hours before going to work. These aren't just kids. They're dads, business owners...you'd be surprised. Walk down to the boardwalk & hit the stucco snack building. Order nachos. Eat, & savoy the grit in your teeth, the sand that gets in everything around here. Nice gritty nachos, that's how we ate 'em every summer of my childhood. Leave a Comment Address: Main Street and PCH, Huntington BeachDirections: Use parking garages off of Main Street. Walk down the pier. Be careful to obey the walk/don't walk signal (locals don't, but you should).
