San Diego is about sixteen miles north of Imperial Beach and would be a nice day trip while visiting. San Diego is the biggest city near Imperial Beach and worth a trip over to enjoy a variety of things to do that would enhance a vacation to this part of California.
There are two ways to get across the Bay. Driving up the Silver Strand, though the City of Coronado and over the Coronado Bridge. This is also the quickest and easiest way. The other way is to take Interstate 5 freeway north up to downtown San Diego. San Diego can also be reach by public transportation.
Take a quick trip across the border to Tijuana, Mexico, just 4 miles to the South. The easiest way of doing this is to park at the Border Station Parking lot located on the West side of Interstate 5 at the last U.S. exit, at 4570 Camino de LaPlaza Blvd in San Ysidro ($7 for all day parking), and catch the Mexicoach bus for a 10 minute ride to downtown bus station at 7th and Revolucion, cost $1.25 each way. The return trip travels via the bus lane and is much faster getting back across the border and through U.S. Customs. They also have trips to Rosarito Beach.
Tijuana is a city of approximately 1.5 million people with lots of good shopping, sightseeing, restaurants and nightlife.
