I am sorry to report that the last Sandcastle Competition was held in August 1011! It is a shame and I'm sure devastating for the city of Imperial Beach.
A few other things you might do while here might be the Classic Car Show held every summer, or the annual Dog-Surfing Contest. Even the IB Farmer's Market held at the Pier Plaza every Friday afternoon might be interesting. Not nearly as crowded, but interesting.
On 30 June, 2013, the new Sandcastle Competition returns to Imperial Beach. It will be the first organized competition in Imperial Beach since the end of the U.S.Open Sandcastle Competition in 2011.
There will be a few differences from the older version. Admission fees will not be charged, nor will access to the beach be blocked as before. Included will be the typical vendors, entertaining activities for adults and children, such as circus acts, an arts festival and other family events. The 50th anniversary of the Port of San Diego will be celebrated as well during the Competition.
