Go Greek For a Weekend at St. Paul's

by marinarena Written May 3, 2014

    Favorite thing: Greek food!

    A Taste of Greece

In keeping with America's love to celebrate other ethnic cultures with food, Irvine throws an annual fest featuring yummy, scrumptious Greek cuisine, spanakopita, kalamata, baklava and all. Held at Saint Paul's Greek Orthodox Church, A Taste of Greece is a great way to get introduced to arguably the best of Mediterranean cuisine. Event volunteers, many of whom are church members, will gladly help you with the pronunciation of the Greek entrees pastries. (Loukoumathes, Gyros, Dolmathes, Paximathia, etc).

Besides food, enjoy watching traditional Greek dances, hearing live music, going on carnival rides, and buying merchandise which helps the church.

Parking is available at a low cost- about $3. The parking spaces are a few blocks away from the event area. Shuttles from the parking lot are made available to get to the main area but may get delayed. Still, they are well worth waiting for if you don't want to walk so much.

Due to the location of the church, public transit is a limited option. You can use the OCTA 76 bus that runs on Culver Dr to get within a 10+ min walking distance to the church, which is on Alton Dr. The OCTA 86 (which normally runs on Alton) only runs M-F with limited run times and this is a weekend event-so TAKE the 79 if you want to take a public trans route.

    Try High Quality, Conscious Food

by marinarena Updated May 3, 2014

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Favorite thing: Irvine's good-for-you restaurants!

The city rivals Newport Beach and Laguna Beach as top city for dining out. Particularly, Irvine has a good number of restaurants and markets that emphasize good, conscious eating, often or exclusively with organic, gluten-free and vegetarian/vegan options. Here is a list of some to try:

Andrei's Conscious Cuisine and Cocktails (a fancier spot and $$$)
Mother's Market (smoothie bar, cafeteria) at 2963 Michelson Dr
Tender Greens at the Spectrum, 31 Fortune Dr
Veggie Grill (Variety of Vegs options) at University Center, 4213 Campus Dr
and the Spectrum, 81 Fortune Dr
Wheel of Life at 14370 Culver Dr, Suite 2G
Whole Foods Market (cafeteria) at The District, 2847 Park Ave, Tustin, CA (very borderline Irvine)
ZPizza (gluten-free pizza and more) at 17655 Harvard Ave

Fondest memory: The veggie burger and sweet potato fries combo is always a hit at Veggie Grill!

Favorite thing: And here's why it's so neat! Someone really knew what they were doing when they planned and executed this layout. The reason I know this is that you only have to move a few steps in any direction and it seems you have a new look, new landscape, and nearly a new place to photograph! That's some more of that "Swingzu" stuff, ain't it?

See An Older Flick for just a Buck

by marinarena Updated Sep 29, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Well, this may be the cheapest way to be entertained in Irvine. I love the one-dollar cinemahouses and make a point of seeking them out and revealing them to all! It is located along Barranca Parkway in the Woodbridge area, which like most parts of Irvine , is pretty. The hot dogs are also a buck here also!

    Go Rabbit Watching!

by marinarena Updated Jun 24, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Throughout the city, rabitts scatter in and out through bushes and on grassy fields. These fast and furry creatures are full-time residents of University of Irvine, along with students themselves! The white tail cuties are all over.

See Irvine: the so-called safest U.S. city

by marinarena Updated Jun 9, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: In the U.S., an annual list comes out each year that ranks the top and bottom cities of America according to particular stats, usually related to violent crime of persons and property per number of residents. In 2005, Irvine has battled its way up to number one- the safest city in the U.S.! The reason why one feels very secure here: Irvine is all about work and living. There is simply no time for crime. Also, the city of Irvine invests well in policing and keeping the place clean in all senses.

Of course, let's not get carried away to think that nothing bad happens here. So, never let your guard down completely, as we still roam on this volatile planet we call Earth!

Still, when you come here to visit for fun at the Spectrum and at various other entertainment venues , you'll very likely be comfortable and at least have a wonderful feeling of security.

    Cruise to Corona Del Mar

by hapybrian Written Feb 27, 2003

Favorite thing: Although strictly not IN Irvine, Corona Del Mar is a beautiful beach spot, not 10 minutes from where I work. Take MacArthur South and then left on PCH. About 1/2 mile down, you'll reach Banderas restaurant (tasty!). Turn right and park on the cliff. It's a beautiful place to enjoy God's creation and walk with the one you love, or have a BBQ with all your buddies.

by ssatinss Written Oct 5, 2002

Favorite thing: I'd take them to the Lab, AKA Anti-Mall, which is a few blocks west of the infamous, humoungous and overpriced South Coast Plaza Mall.

Fondest memory: Riding my banana-seat bicycle through the hot summer days with my friends. Playing made-up games in my front yard. Climbing the trees. Swinging really high.

Fondest memory: This is more a place to share views with you than to tell you about what to do here. But if you have a business trip to this part of Irvine, I'm pretty sure you'll like the area!

Fondest memory: My office was such a mess but I did clean it up before I left. This office had a nice view of the 405 freeway. I could watch the traffic to figure out when is the best time to leave.
